Overview of SITN:Science in the News is a seminar series put on by the Yale Science Diplomats for the New Haven Community. We will have 5 events, one per month from Jan-May 2015. Each event consists of three, 15-minute talks, each given by a Global warmingAging: mtDNA, geriatirc care, telomeres, naked mole rats!
50
Yale grad student or post-doc, followed by Q&A/discussion. The exact topics will be determined based on on the interests of our selected speakers, but we generally try for topics that will be of broad interest to the general public and Nuclear & other alternative energiesFlu: avian flu, transmission to mammals, flu vaccines
51
we like to cover a wide range of disciplines across the 5 events. All the events are free and open to everybody (and we have free cookies!). Last year we had a great mix of people: adults and children, Yale-affiliated and non Biodiversity, biogeography, conservationHIV: treatments, mutation rate of the virus, drug discovery
52
Yale-affiliated, some science background and zero science background. About 60-80 people came per talk and everyone loved it! They ask many great questions and are genuinely excited to hear about research from a real scientist!GMOs, organic food, synthetic meat: pros and cons
53
Biological machines (ex: plant hoppers are insects with gears!)
