USB causes fatal exception

System: PII 800/256RAM, Win98, Gigabyte GA-BX2000+ mobo.

Problem:
I had a Minolta slide scanner installed on my USB port and everything was
working fine. I then removed it and tried installing an Epson flatbed
scanner, which apparently caused a conflict error with the TWAIN drivers,
but seems to have manifested itself in the USB ports.

Connecting the USB cable to port w/ computer on would cause the infamous
blue screen "A fatal exception at 0E occurred at 0028:FF04D066 in VXD
usbhub(05) + 00000A26. The current application will be terminated." After
hitting return, I get a black screen that can be "erased" after opening and
closing any other application. However, there is no live connection at the
USB port.

If I connect the USB cable to port w/ computer off, then turn computer on,
it will not load Windows, giving a Windows Protection fault.

Both of the above happen only when the scanner is powered on. With the
scanner off, connecting the USB cable to port causes no problems.

I never could get the Epson to work, so I uninstalled it, then manually
removed whatever wouldn't un-install. I then tried re-installing the
Minolta scanner, but still have the same problems that originated with the
Epson scanner (IOW, can't connect a live USB cable).

Does this sound like a USB problem, or a TWAIN driver problem? Can I
manually re-install drivers for both? Where would I find them (on the Win98
disk or MS website) and what would they be called? Any other ideas on what
the problem might be? Please HELP!

Epson installs it's own USB driver. This has to be removed. Go to the
Windows\Inf folder and remove anything related to USBxxxxxx.xxx. Next in the
Configuration screen remove the USB devices. Have your Win98 CD ready and
restart the beast. It will detect the USB and asks for the driver. If
something old is found it will ask you to keep the driver. Always reply with
'No' i.e. install/load the driver from the CD....After tons of restarts
you're back in business.

Thanks! I finally got it to work, after deleting ALL usbxxx files and
re-installing them off the Win98 disk.

Meanwhile, I tried hooking the slide scanner up to an older computer (300
PII) that did not have USB ports. I installed a PCI to USB card,
installation went fine, USBREADY.EXE program says system is fully USB-ready.
However, the slide scanner can't verify its connection to the USB port,
either prior to or after installing the scanner software. Any suggestions
there?
