1. What does Install On Demand do? (Does MS use this for updates?)
2. What is DW.exe? (This is in 2 places: a folder called Download Ware in
Program Files folder AND in Internet Explorer folder.)
3. What is QMgr? (This is also in QMgr folder in Program Files folder.)
4. What is Hopper, apparently known as NE.exe? (This is found at
c:/Program Files/Network Essentials/v8)

This morning, upon the day's initial boot up, I noticed DW, QMgr and Hopper
trying to activate. I don't recall this activity at anytime before.

I am running Win98 first edition with all the current updates and patches,
Internet Explorer v. 5.0.

I'd appreciate any light anyone can shed on my questions. Thanks in
advance.

Qmgr: http://www.answerbank.co.uk/Article.go?id=2834&category_id=null If
you like using MSN Messenger I have heard that it's better to disable it
with msconfig than just delete it. I've disabled mine from startup and
Messenger works fine- Zone Alarm says all is quiet.

NE.exe is popup spyware according to cexx. Towards the bottom of the
"Advertising Spyware" section of this page: http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm
they say this:
"NE.EXE (Network Essentials / SmartPops) - Displays stealthy popup ads while
surfing the Web or using search engines. Wow! To hear it from them, this is
the best service on earth--boy are they helpful. Remove by uninstalling
"Network Essentials" in Add/Remove Programs."

Regards,

Ionizer.

Ionizer! Thanks! I got smart earlier today and uninstalled DW.exe and
NE.exe and I've had not untoward results since. In fact, now my system is
operating like it did two days ago. But I'm happy to know what these things
were. Thanks again, very much, for your response. For now, I'm going to
leave QMgr as is.

Have you tried a virus scan, Lavasoft's AdAware?

Re: NE.EXE and/or Hopper

We have recently had some inquiries about this software and our site.
We are in no way affiliated with the organization(s) that are using
NE.EXE
We are not a software vendor nor do we use "spyware".

Our site have thousands of free on-line questions for various
certification programs (i.e. MCSE, CSA, OCP, HP-UX, and others).
