Odysseus Elytis (1911-96) won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1979. With Seferis and the 'Generation of the Thirties', he introduced French Surrealism into Greek poetry. Kimon Friar’s classic translation The Sovereign Sun begins with his brilliantly sensuous early poems. It has large selections from his master work, Axion Esti (1959), and includes the whole of his Heroic and Elegiac Song for the Lost Second Lieutenant of the Albanian Campaign (1945). His Nobel Prize citation stated: ‘Against the background of Greek tradition, his poetry depicts with sensuous strength and clearsightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness.’

Review
He has a romantic and lyrical mind, which deploys a metaphysic of complete intellectual sensuality-the rocks, the islands, the blue Greek sea, the winds; they are at once "real" and also "signatures" in the alchemical sense. He makes his magic with them, and it is peculiarly Greek magic that he makes. His poems are spells, and they conjure up that eternal Greek world which has haunted and continues to haunt the European consciousness with its hints of a perfection that always remains a possibility. The Greek poet aims his heart and his gift directly at the sublime - for nothing else will do. How lucky, too, that he has found in Kimon Friar a translator who can transplant his poetry into English, so that its freshness and spontaneity still shock and delight.' – Lawrence Durrell

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2022Format: HardcoverI recently lucked into an estate sale with a mountain of modern Greek literature, among them dozens of books of poetry by modern Greek masters. I purchased the whole lot. It had been about 40 years since I read these artists in my poor to middling modern Greek language skills, but they still impress me deeply. It is our great fortune that the "generation of the 1930's" modern Greek poets, Nobel Prize winners Elytis and Seferis, as well as Cavafy and Sikelianos are available in translation.
This modest volume of Elytis' work includes a representative sampling of the wonderous epic "Axion Esti" and some of the best of Elytis' shorter poems such as the stunningly beautiful and original "The Autopsy." In fact I dare any reader to read Autopsy without being struck dumb by its layers, its combining of dry augury and perfectly sublime metaphors.
The translations by Kimon Friar are rightly considered better than those of other Elytis English language translators such Carson or Broumas. Friar's introductory essay on the poet's biography and the background of many of the poems, as well as his notes, are very well done.
For more good English language translations of the four greats, look for Edmund Keeley's "Four Modern Greek Poets," Keeley, Sherrard and Savidis' "C.P. Cavafy: Selected Poems," Rex Warner's "George Seferis: Poems," Keeley and Savidis' "Passion and Ancient Days (Cavafy), Keeley and Sherrard's "George Seferis: collected Poems" along with the full "Axion Esti (which have side by side Greek and English), and the marvelously crazy Sikelianos, represented in Keeley and Sherrard's "Angelos Sikelianos: Collected Poems (also bilingual presentation, Greek and English).
