Geraldine Evans writes the 18-strong Rafferty & Llewellyn Mystery Series; funny, family orientated mysteries that are brilliant at taking you out of yourself, and which have earned her several awards and some wonderful reviews.

She was born in London and brought up on a south London council estate. Even though, like her three older siblings, she left school in her mid-teens, she found a love of life-long-learning shortly after. Why not before? Ah, there’s a tale for another time!

She turned to writing in her twenties, but it was hitting thirty that gave her the grit to endure six years of rejections. And then, after being plucked twice from slush piles (Hale and Macmillan), she spent eighteen years as a traditionally published author. Her previous publishers include Macmillan, St Martin’s Press, Worldwide, Hale, Thorpe (large print), Severn House, and Soundings (audio).

She took control of her own destiny and turned Indie in 2010. Since becoming an Indie, she's gone on to publish all of her back-list, including Reluctant Queen, about the little sister of Henry VIII, the Casey & Catt Mystery Series, and various new works.

Since the heady day of learning her first novel was to be published, she's experienced the usual switchback ride of the average writer's life, but she says becoming an Indie, and having control of her writing career and destiny, is the best thing ever. She hopes her story will encourage other working-class people to take their lives by the scruff of the neck and go for it!

Geraldine moved to a market town in Norfolk (UK) in 2000, with George, her late husband. She wouldn’t move back.

She is a member of Mystery People, the Crime Writers Association, and The Alliance of Independent Authors.

I enjoyed this book, which kept me guessing to the end, very much. It is a good read for times when you can spare the time to relax.

    My wife's review:

This is my first Geraldine Evans novel, but it won't be my last. The story is about a group of old classmates who all go back to their old school for a reunion but one of them ends up murdered, however before long another victim is added to the list.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt that the police procedurals conducted within the story where very realistic. It felt like Joe Rafferty and his side-kick, Daf Llewellyn, where getting nowhere with their investigation, until all of a sudden the killer was revealed at the end. I certainly wouldn't have guessed who the killer was, although it was well explaned as to why the killer had conducted the murder after they were revealed. The only negative I can say is that the book was a little short, although while reading it I didn't feel like the author had rushed it or that anything was missing, but just shy of 200 pages is a little short in my opinion. Having said that, I will definitely read another of these Rafferty and Llewellyn mysteries.

DI Joseph Rafferty just returned from his honeymoon is welcomed back to work with the body of Adam Ainsley, sports celebrity who has been found dead from poisoning.

Adam Ainsley had been attending a reunion at his old school. Griffin House is an imposing building dating back to the late 1550's and numbers some prestigious old-boys. Rafferty and his Sergeant the elegant Llewellyn set up shop in the Senior Common Room and begins the interviews. Eventually following the forensic evidence, and means and opportunity, Rafferty narrows his investigations down to a handful of suspects.

Meanwhile, Rafferty's Ma is organising her own family reunion and with the aid of the Internet has discovered many hitherto unheard of distant relatives - she has invited them all. Having a key to Rafferty's house she has commandeered Rafferty's two spare rooms and happily installed four of these relatives. Regrettably, being a busy woman she hasn't got around to telling Rafferty about this development in his living arrangements, thus he hasn't told his wife Abra. So with Superintendent Bradley on his case for a quick result owing to budget restrictions at work, and Abra on the war path at home Rafferty is as usual in it up to his neck.

As they pursue their investigations super-sportsman golden boy Adam begins to look a little tarnished. Rafferty has several theories but Llewellyn keeps pouring cold water on them.

This is another excellent entry in this marvellous series. The characters spring off the page. The dialogue is sparkling, there is great interplay between the two detectives, and the mystery intriguing to the end.
