This arrangement you reference very common in monitor repair here, unlike
TV, Video etc.

We repair around 5 Compaq V70 monitors a week, plus a few V75, V90, 140 and
QVision 200's. The only Compaq schematics we've ever sourced was for the
QVision 200, as its a Fimi/Philips chassis and for the old 420 and 460.
These are available from ICHE in the UK, they are agents for MI
Technologies, who trace and plot the circuits. The rest have to be repaired
without schematics. Unfortunately I've nothing on your model. There are many
repairers in the UK repairing Compaq, but simply without the manufacturers
support. They don't have a monopoly.

With monitors its very common for a nationwide contract to be awarded to one
company. The warranty repair monitors are usually exchanged and repaired for
very little profit. Manufacturers competing with each other have very little
to allocate to the service side. Monitor costs have come down, but the cost
to repair is always going up, a hopeless situation. By repairing at often
break even pricing, the warranty repairer is assured they are only source of
proprietary parts, service data, and more importantly, DAS software. They
then expect to make up their profit on out of warranty work.

Just out of interest, who are the company you contacted and how much did
they quote you?

Re schematics, if you knew the manufacturer of your Compaq monitor, it might
be ADI or Samsung, you may be able to get a similar manual from another
source. You would never get the same manual, as manufacturers usually don't
supply service information for OEM products.

I'm not familiar with your model, but others reading this NG might be. It's
worth posting a little more about the monitors fault symptoms and any tests
you've carried out.

3023-M COMPAQ 451,453,454,455 SVGA COLOR MONITOR $ 49.95

Found at http://www.mitechnologies.com/schematics.html

These are just schematics.

You could try contacting Tony Bailey at http://www.iche.com/, as they are
the UK agent for these schematics. The odd thing is their list is no where
as comprehensive as M I Technologies.

That must have been Eurographics, they support many manufacturers and are
very *big*.

But I do remember that there was a

Unfortunately the cost of repair bares no resemblance to the monitors value,
but £100 is steep. That would also no doubt not include VAT, and as an end
user you probably wouldn't be VAT registered, then there's shipping costs
unless your local. We charge 60 UKP + VAT for 17" monitor repairs, again
excluding the FBT, CRT and case. It is only the more expensive monitors that
are repaired at that price.

Another post re this points out the your monitor is a Nokia 447, there are
quite a few versions of this monitor going back around 5 years. If there is
any number reference to 447, I have an early 447b service manual if it is
similar. Unfortunately the newer 447's are nothing like the old.
