Across the Red (The Nations Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 480 ratings

Between the Indian Nations and Texas lies an area on the south side of the Red River that was once the winter camp for the likes of the notorious guerrillas, William Clarke Quantrill, Bloody Bill Anderson and later, the James Gang—known as Delaware Bend.
The same northeast portion of Cooke County, Texas in 1896 was the center of a massive rustling operation by the Red River Gang.
Texas Ranger Bodie Hickman enlists the aid of Deputy United States Marshals Bass Reeves and Jack McGann to go undercover to end this scourge once and for all.
But, the Red River Gang slaughters a sixteen man patrol of US Army soldiers to acquire a new weapon—a deadly Gatling Gun.
Bass and Jack add Marshal Brushy Bill Roberts and Chickasaw Lighthorse Osí Hommá and Bodie calls upon fellow Texas Ranger Walt Durbin, to bolster their forces against the gang.
Will it be enough when they have to face the awesome firepower of a ten barrel Gatling Gun? Who's the mysterious person behind the massive rustling operation?
Find out in the exciting fourth novel in the award winning and best selling Bass Reeves saga of The Nations—ACROSS the RED.

Across the Red, by Ken Farmer and Buck Stienke, brought the old west back to life for me. Presently, we can only remember older books and films if we wish to know what the early days of America might have been like. It’s not even taught in schools anymore. The authors have lived lives and surely done a wealth of research that enables them to write such stories. History will later thank them, not to mention readers of historical books such as these.

Though I won’t give away the audacious story line, it’s more than exciting because of the twists, turns and antics that you’d never expect, and yet the story and the lives of the characters are so true to life. The characters are extremely well-drawn with personalities unique to each one. Something that makes them each unique is the dialogue. It’s incredible. To enhance the brogues and accents of each character, a lot of spelling in dialogues is done phonetically. Usually it slows the reading but the only reason it slowed this reader was because the phonetic spellings were so perfect I could hear them in my head. I just had to stop and read the lines again and be awed. Writing this way takes a lot of skill and daring, but these authors seem to know exactly when to take chances.

Did I mention that I loved the story? I was glued to my Kindle. Then came the surprise ending. Make that plural – endings – because with so many characters and entwined lives, there was a lot of wrap up in a brief period of time with twists that creep up and hit you fast. If you enjoy western and historical stories about early America, that just happen to be peopled with the most real and unique characters, I highly recommend this book.

This author is simply one of my favorites. I love the Nations series. In this book, Bass Reeves and his fellow law men are charged with bringing to justice horse and cattle rustlers. These men are murderers and enjoy it. The many impersonations Bass masterminds are ingenious. The twists and turn of events are full of action as well as entertaining. The plots are fully developed and the characters are interesting. I love this author's style of writing and look forward to the next book. Another must read! I gave the book a 5 rating because of the content, but as with all books I read, there are grammatical errors 😟.

KF. has penned a Oklahoma western action adventure titled, "Across the Red" which begins with an ambush of a US Marshal and his partner. The Marshal clears his horse immediately, but his inexperienced deputy is shot and killed. The Marshal collects evidence for future use. As he is returning home the same gang that waylaid him are robbing two separate banks. During the escape one gang is killed and the other steals a Gatling gun. The other Rangers and Marshals in the area get together to formulate a plan of attack. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

I believe that a few typos or using here instead of hear are excusable errors and can sometimes be blamed on spellcheck programs. However, that the author would misspell one of main characters name throughout the book and the editor didn't correct the mistake shows real ignorance or just a lack of care.

I am talking about Francis Ann. It should be Frances Ann. The old saying is i is for him, e is for her. I am surprised the editor didn't catch it.
