Ally Orientation and Introduction Session on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in the Tutor Campus Center (TCC) Room 350/351
This LGBT Resource Center’s (LGBTRC) Ally Orientation and Introduction Session educates USC students, faculty and staff members about the campus resources for out, closeted and questioning students. Participants will learn appropriate resources to assist with their personal development that includes the coming out process and self-identification within the LGBT community. In addition to resources, participants will explore the anxieties, frustrations and hardships students deal with as they come to terms with their sexuality and/or gender identity. Participants will receive a safe zone sticker to display in their workplace identifying their Ally identity and affiliation with the LGBT community. If you have already attended this introduction session and received your Ally sticker, then please do not attend this introduction session again. However, if there are colleagues from departments or schools who are not registered Allies with the LGBTRC, then please encourage them to attend.
Ally Discussion: Media Representation of LGBT Athletes on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in the Tutor Campus Center (TCC) Room 350/351
At this interactive discussion, Evan Brody, Doctoral Candidate in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, will present his dissertation research and provide an analysis regarding entertainment perspectives and media representations of LGBT athletes. In addition, Adam Rogers, Project Specialist for The Norman Lear Center in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, will share depictions of LGBT athletes in television and discuss how media stereotypes can affect the coming out process for athletes along with recent progress for out sport characters in television. Participants will also get a sneak peek to a special sports and LGBT conference later in the month at USC.
Ally Discussion: GLAAD's Trans Media Education on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in Tutor Campus Center (TCC) 450 (The Forum)
According to recent polls, 90% of Americans say they personally know someone who is lesbian, gay, or bisexual, but only 8% of Americans say they personally know someone who is transgender. Given these statistics, the role of the media in educating the public about transgender people is critical. Representatives from GLAAD, known as the LGBT movement's communications epicenter, will speak about how GLAAD works directly with news media, entertainment media, cultural institutions and social media to advocate for fair and accurate stories of transgender people.
Ally Discussion: Progressive LGBT Representation in the Media on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in the Tutor Campus Center (TCC) Room 350/351
Alison Trope, Clinical Professor in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, teaches classes on gender and media that address media representations of gender, race and sexuality as well as industrial and institutional obstacles to diversity in media. Trope will discuss the role of positive LGBT media images in relation to social justice and the LGBT equality movement.
