WINTER 2017 NEWS
Good books.  Good drinks.  Great friends!

BookTini's 2017 Winter Reading List

Our new reading season is here, and we welcome you to join us on this fun ride of literary goodness.

We're adding more structure to the club in 2017, and spreading the responsibility around so members across chapters can have an active role in helping BookTini glow. Our new Book Board is designed to create our literary selection voting ballots from member nominations, while our new Cocktail Council researches and selects the wines and spirits paired with our reads. We now have a new Executive Assistant Committee who will assist with member recognition and national events, and we've added a Community Service Chair position to the Executive Board, who, along with chapter representatives, will develop and execute our national community service initiative. It's very exciting to imagine the great things to come with more experienced and committed hands working the BookTini pot.

Another change: due to low participation, we're cutting our monthly book poll. We will instead have monthly online book discussions on our Members Only FB page at the beginning of the month following our reads. The book discussions will be led by members of our Book Board. If you have something you're dying to say about our selections or cocktails, be sure to chime in there.

In our first ever seasonal newsletter below, we have our usual Dates to Remember information, upcoming events, Support A Black Book Store Month, our national retreat locale reveal, and information about our winter literary selections and cocktails. Keep this newsletter handy for easy reference for any questions throughout January and February.

As always...

HAPPY READING!

With Literary Love,
Nakia White
Co-Founder & Executive Chair

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Efforts to further the part of BookTini's mission that promotes the gift of literacy through charity led our Twin Cities chapter to collect and donate books to the Women's Prison Book Project through Minneapolis' Boneshaker Books store in November.

Women of color disproportionately make up the women's prison population, and one of the more popular requests are books by and about women of color, so they made sure to donate books that would educate and entertain that demographic. Great job, ladies!

BookTini's Uptown Oakland chapter also joined in the mission to spread the gift of literacy through charity by donating more than 40 books and helping to mail more than 70 while volunteering at the Prisoners Literature Project (PLP) in Berkeley, CA in November. uOAK Member Tiffany Black (second from right) was so moved by the organization that she later collected monetary donations and nearly 300 more books for the cause from friends and colleagues . Great job, ladies!

PLP is an all-volunteer grassroots group that sends hundreds of free book packages to needy prisoners in the United States every month.

We have selected Eso Won Books to support for our annual Support A Black Owned Book Store month in February. Eso Won is an independent African American book store that has served the Los Angeles area since 1987. They have a celebrated history of creating safe spaces for both Black authors and Black readers. As National Book Award winner Ta-Nehisi Coates recently shared in the NY Times article "7 Writers on Their Favorite Book Stores":

"Eso Won is one among a long tradition of black bookstores that sprang up to water [our] roots. It is part of the larger community of independent bookstores that writers celebrate, but its specific mission is to make sure black authors always have a home. This is important to me, not because it’s the world that I spring from but because it is the river I continue to drink from... In much the same way we need diversity among authors and editors, we need diversity among the ranks of booksellers. They are the ultimate arbiters of our literary tradition. In these coming dark times, we can scarcely afford to be without them."

We're asking that every member support Eso Won Books in February by purchasing Hidden Figures through them instead of Amazon or reserving from the library. Our collective effort can make a tremendous impact for a store that has made our stories a priority.

When we contacted Eso Won Books about supporting them for this endeavor, co-owner James Fulgate was happy for the opportunity to share Hidden Figures with us, and offered FREE shipping to the entire club.

Ordering by chapter will work over the phone at 323-290-1048. Books (w/o tax) are $15.99 for paperback, $27.99 for hardcover. Store hours for phone orders are 10a - 7p Monday-Saturday and 12p - 5p on Sunday.

Be sure to order in mid-January, and let them know that BookTini sent you. Check out the links below for more information on Eso Won Books.
