The Bricoleur - A Mastermind Group for                       Life Coaches (CE: 20 hours)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This Mastermind Group is designed to support the needs of life coaches, and especially those who serve youth as academic coaches, test prep coaches, career cooaches, etc., and have less than two years of experience in this role, to create a coach program or launch a coaching practice based on their niche and speciality, design a set of Stepping Stones, and leadership action strategies to ensure success in their practice. This Mastermind Group is proposed to last 8 sessions, and meets weekly for 2 hours, and is limited to 20 participants who have completed the Academic Coach Training Workshop (or an alternative coach training program that leads to coach certification) within the last year.

“No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force,                  which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind].”     -  Napolean Hill

WHAT IS A MASTERMIND GROUP?  Mastermind groups offer a combination of brainstorming, education, peer accountability and support in a group setting to sharpen your business and personal skills. A mastermind group helps you and your mastermind group members achieve success. Members challenge each other to set strong goals, and more importantly, to accomplish them. Mastermind group facilitators start and run groups. They help the group to dive deeply into discussions, and work with members to create success — as each member defines it. Facilitators are the secret to thriving mastermind groups. I’ve seen plenty of groups fail because of poor leadership.

HOW DOES THE MASTERMIND PROCESS WORK?  Through a mastermind group process, first you create a goal, then design a plan to achieve it. The group helps you with creative ideas and wise decisions-making. Then, as you begin to implement your plan, you bring both success stories and problems to the group. Success stories are applauded, and problem are solved through peer brainstorming and collective, creative thinking. How does the process get people to make and keep action plans?  It all starts with the individual Hot Seat process. In each Hot Seat, an individual member talks about his specific problem, decision or goal, and then the group spends a set amount of time masterminding/brainstorming about his situation. But it doesn't stop there! The  Hot Seat member has to select one Action Item he will complete before the next meeting. Sometimes the member knows instantly which idea he’ll move forward on. Sometimes that action item is to simply list all the ideas, weigh each idea against goals and resources, and choose the best idea from that meeting. Along with choosing an action item, the member has to set a deadline for themselves. The Facilitator will ensure that they are in the “sweet spot” of having plans and deadlines that both challenging and do-able. By our collective focus as mastermind group members to set and keep goals and create action plans, the group ensures that each member is accountable for their own success.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO THIS EXPERIENCE? The group requires commitment, confidentiality, willingness to both give and receive advice and ideas, and support each other with total honesty, respect and compassion. Mastermind group members act as catalysts for growth, devil’s advocates and supportive colleagues. This is the essence and value of mastermind groups.

WHAT DO I BRING TO THIS EXPERIENCE? Each meeting has a mastermind group agenda, so that conversations stay on course. The Facilitator is tasked with making sure that conversations are deep and balanced, and that all mastermind group meeting agenda items are covered in the time allotted. By providing the structure and tools the group needs, the Facilitator ensures that the group can create the personal and professional life they want.

Learning Objectives:

Through didactic method, discussion, structured reflection, discussion, and practical exercises, professional coaches will improve their proficiency in the content and process roles of training. As a professional activity, this Mastermind Group is shaped by the following specific learning objectives:

  • Recognize potential opportunities that represent gaps in coaching offerings (e.g. coaching niche and coaching specialties) to identify the framework for a coaching practice (e.g. internal coaching initiatives, external coaching engagements, specialties such as health and wellness coach, divorce coach, academic coach, etc.).
  • Identify the one element that will serve as the focus the coaching solution that represents the coach’s primary work. This will serve as the foundation of practice design.
  • Apply the collective wisdom of the designed alliance to design the coaching intervention using the Opportunity Discover Canvas, or other business model framework.
  • Experiment with the future best self as a life coach (or, the envisioned future of the program) to determine stepping stones that build the business development structure that represents best practices, is in alignment to law and ethical considerations, and serves a distinct target population.
  • Design the actions and align environmental factors (including relationships) that are necessary to achieve a successful business infrastructure (external coaches) or program infrastructure (internal coaches).
  • Design strategies on director presence and patterns of management to accelerate leadership effectiveness and project success.
  • Evaluate the tactics within the intermediate steps to discern progress towards your launch and to determine what’s left to achieve success of the envisioned future.

Successful Completion:

Full attendance is expected and required. Successful completion of the course is dependent on class attendance, active participation in class activities, practical exercises, case studies, and independent reading. It is essential that the pre-work activities are completed prior the start of the learning event, and that the fieldwork is completed for full engagement in this learning opportunity.
