- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2019Color: Poker Box 1Verified PurchaseI purchased this for my 12-week old Goldendoodle puppy, Stuart. He is a VERY active puppy and demands constant attention. He has tons of squeaky toys, teething rings, bones, a fun play-mat, and even a tunnel to run through and lay in, but he still gets bored. We are working with a trainer, and she suggested that I get him some puzzle type toys to keep him busy and challenged.
Today was the second time we've tried the toy out. The first time I put dry kibble and a couple of small training treats in the compartments. Stuart seemed happy with it, and it kept him occupied for 20 minutes or so. This time I decided to put bits of banana, small bits of chicken pill pockets, a couple of cubes of ice, and kibble in the separate compartments. I smeared the banana and pill pockets in the corners of the individual compartments as well as the lid thinking that it would take him more time to lick it out of the corners than just eating it.
He was elated and had much fun getting to the treats. It took him about 35 minutes to complete the puzzle (or whatever it's called) from beginning to end. I decided to leave the toy out for a bit because he was still working to see if he missed anything. This lasted for another 30 minutes or so. After all of that, it was nap time. So at the end of the day, it took up a couple hours of his time!
I think he is going to like it for some time to come if I use it sparingly to keep his interest. However, he is VERY interested in food and treats so that it may keep his attention with continued use, but I would think that he would end up getting good at it and it would take less time to complete the task. To me, it seems as though it needs to stay challenging because otherwise all of the treats end up being a pretty significant reward for spending limited time and energy. Which I'm not crazy about. Plus, I wouldn't think it would be very healthy to do on a regular basis. Though, as far as I know, small bits of banana are safe from time-to-time, and I'm sure that a couple of pill pockets used as a treat are safe as well. Indeed ice cubes and kibble is fine.
The only concern I have is that consuming the mixture of all the different types of treats in the same sitting (even though I only used a couple of small bits of banana,1 1/2 to 2 small pill pockets, and a tiny bit of kibble) will upset his stomach. I'll wait and see I suppose. Also, even if only used occasionally, I'm not sure that it is healthy for him. With that aside, I'm very pleased with the product and I know Stuart is as well.
I recommend the product as long as you're comfortable with treats.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2020Color: Poker Box 1Verified PurchaseI love this toy and had hoped it would take him longer to fingure out. He got it so quickly, that the game ends too fast and I have to reset it. My husband let him chew on the knob of one of the lids after it was empty (I always move them away once he has gotten his treat), so I can't say its completely durable.
For a big, intelligent dog like ours, I have found a great deal more extended fun play time feeling the boxes and hiding them outside around the yard. Of course you could do it inside, but my active pup needs a whole lot of physical exercise.
I would caution against buying the Poker Box 2, which is often offere by Amazon as part of a marketing deal. That toy (although supposedly a level 2) is NOT nearly as appropriate for a bigger dog as this might be.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021Color: Poker Box 1Verified PurchaseAdding an update, 4/9/22. I have both "Poker Box" versions. For the first time, I moved elements from the one Poker Box to the other Poker Box. It was as if my dog had a whole new game. Up to now, he knew exactly what to pull, push, lift. The different look slowed him down & he had to think it through again. LOVE THIS adaptability! Original review: Purchased this before manning a booth at a 4 day dog show with my dogs. When my dogs got bored, we brought out this box and after a couple of reps, the dogs were calmer and focused - and no longer bored. I love the fact it can be easily cleaned, it is quite sturdy, and it isn't super-easy / mindless. They have to actually figure out how to open each section. You can rearrange so it is in different order, or use as individual pieces. We often had other people stop with their dogs to check it out and ask where we got it. Very popular! Down side, the knobbed cover seems to attact chewing, so be aware of that. Definitely worth the 5 stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2022Color: Poker Box 1Verified PurchaseMy dogs love working these puzzle boxes. We use them as a training reward, and this really helps keep the dogs engaged waiting for a release to go get a treat from the puzzles. The boxes are fairly strong, but can be knocked apart by an overly enthusiastic dog. Easily put back together, however. I am impressed at the overall quality and durability; we use them outside as well as indoors, and I also throw them in the car for offsite training. And it's amazing to me that the pull-strings used on two of the puzzle boxes have remained intact despite multiple dogs using them to get to their treats inside. [I would not leave them with dogs unattended - they're not chew toys despite how attractive the hard plastic may be to a dog's teeth. :-) ]
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2015Color: Poker Box 1Verified PurchaseThis is a really well designed puzzle! You can switch the boxes around to make them face other sides and you can change their placement. Each challenge is distinctly different. I never thought she'd get the pull out box, but surprisingly she got that one easily. She had the hardest time with the box that has the knob - it took her a while to figure out that she had to slide the top out. The boxes are pretty easy to clean, since they all slide out of the base. One of the things that impresses me the most is that it's virtually impossible to 'cheat'. She tried to chew her way through each challenge at first, but there's really no way she could grasp the sides or top of them with her teeth. I suppose a dog might shake the boxes to cheat, but it's pretty sturdy, and the boxes sit firmly in the sliders. Every time I give it to her I can tell that she's remembering that she's encountered the challenge before and trying to recall how she mastered it. I probably need to get another one or two so I can switch them around for a few days. I'm pretty impressed so far! (By the way I have another dog who looked at it curiously and then sat down next to it and waited for me to give her a treat. Clearly this doesn't work for non-food motivated dogs!)
