*POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell for?
This attractive mint stamp was auctioned this week. It is on laid paper and the Scott number is 3.
I am away from home right now and perhaps someone can be so good to add the Gibbons and Scott catalogue values to this thread to hopefully assist others.
Please make your guess as to price, and add any general comments here, and as always in these POLLS please refrain from adding any comment that ID's the price or anything about this example, or this Sherriff's Deputy will rapidly visit upon your post!
My only comment is, that in my opinion - someone got an absolute bargain.

Re: *POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell
A classic stamp, 4 full margins...it should have gone for a strong price.
Even as "a bargain" I'm still going to go a bit high.

Re: *POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell
2011 Scott cv is $125,000 (in italics) for part OG, $80,000 for no gum.
Scott notes:
"Values for unused stamps of #1-33 are for partial OG... Examples with full original gum and lightly hinged are extremely scarce and generally sell for substantially more than the values listed."

I went for 5. This would be just above SG catalog, for what is an absolute gem in all respects. A truly gorgeous stamp.

This is by far the best known example of this one and was creating a bit of a buzz in Canada. I don't know what it sold for but it should be added to the world's list of important rarities.

I voted Under $US50,000, because everyone is saying it was a bargain.
But to be honest, I have no idea what it sold for. Should be an interesting thread.

Re: *POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell
Maybe that's why it was a bargain...put it inside 50 cents worth of plastic and you can 'flip' it for twice as much money. Its what everyone was doing with houses in the USA, there were even TV shows devoted to showing you how...take a dump, add a bit of window-dressing and suddenly its desirable.fromdownunder wrote:And it wasn't even slabbed.
Since the GFC killed the housing market, everyone has been talking about "alternative investments" like...stamps...

Ouch! I must tidy up before my next visitors!
On a scale of "Trailer Park 1" to "McMansion with Fries 7", I'd go a Goulburn Nice Country Cottage 4.
It might be the "country", but we do have Coles, Woolies and Aldi you city slickers!
We also have a beaut Courthouse and a stonking great super max gaol.
Tralier Park photo, my word what next, shot feral pigs hanging off the back of a ute? Mismatching ugg boots and tracky dackies? Wal-martians on holiday?!

Re: *POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell
Not sure why but $135,000 US is ringing bells but that may have been last time it sold. If its the same stamp I believe it has gone from Canada to the US back to Canada and again back to the Us . Like I said I could be totally wrong on the specific stamp but there was doubts if it would ever reside back in its home country.
I can only imagine the collection this has or will sit in and often wonder if the collectors of such high values collect for the art of collecting or for the dollar value attached. None the less a great piece of philatelic history.

Re: *POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell
"The Black Empress"
This exciting stamp is accompanied by a letter dated August 10, 1965 from J.N. Sissions, one of the most highly regarded Canadian auctioneers of the 20th Century, in which he describes the stamp as "...genuine and flawless, brilliant original gum, never hinged and immaculate in all respects. I believe it to be the finest existing copy." Attached to the letter are photographic enlargements of both the front and reverse of the stamp.
In addition, the stamp was recently submitted to the Philatelic Foundation in New York City to obtain an updated report on its genuineness and condition. On May 3, 2010 the PF issued certificate #486541 and stated the stamp is "unused, o.g., genuine, never hinged." Furthermore, the PF assigned the coveted numeric grade of "Superb 98" to the stamp - a grade that is almost never assigned to any classic stamp of the world, let alone a world class rarity.
Unitrade catalog does not even attempt to assign a value for an original gum copy in superb condition such as The Black Empress, let alone the fact that it is never hinged. The earliest issues Unitrade attempts to price in never hinged condition is for the 1868-1876 Large Queen series, and never hinged copies are given a 300% premium over the very fine no gum pricing. The last original gum, premium quality, mint example of the 12d. Black was in our November 2009 sale of the William H. Gross collection of Important British North America.
It realized $299,100.00 (including the buyer's premium). While the Gross example is a wonderfully choice stamp, its margins are not near as large as found on The Black Empress and, more significantly, it was hinged, as is every other known single or pair - except for the exciting example offered here
Auctioned by Shreve/Spink New York Jan 27.
The hinged Gross copy got $US300,000 for an example not near as attractive.
It is one of the most famous stamps on the globe in ANY condition, and to have one genuine UNHINGED MINT from 1851 almost beggars belief!
As I said, in my view it was a bargain, and if I had the money I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.
In general I feel anyone buying "MUH" high values even from 100 years back needs to see a psychiatrist, but this one is totally beyond doubt.

I was disappointed that my pre-auction SAN bid of $150,000 was not the opener...
Seriously, my wife flipped out when I told her that I had bid $150k on something as a lark. As others have noted, it would have been a bargain at that price. At 425k plus commission, I'm not so sure...

UM it may authentically be, but still are most philatelists stamp collectors or gum collectors?
You could get a nicely-margined hinged copy for half that price, and spend the other $200finishing all the rest of a complete Canada collection, with a good chunk of provinces thrown in.

Re: *POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell
Charles Shreve kindly just sent me some far higher rez images.
These are probably the VERY best images on the web of the Canada 1851 12d Black stamp, as I doubt anyone else asked for the 16 MEG printers files.

The price achieved for this stamp is a bit of a bargain compared to the prices for very rare stamps of some other countries.
Some collectors soaked the gum off of the mint pence stamps to protect them from damage.
As the gum dried out it would sometimes split the paper that the stamp was printed on.

Apparently rare stamps are theoretically a good investment, or it sold at Shreves as a bargain-buy, as the Black Empress is now being flogged for...$750,000.

As I typed a year back - it was a BARGAIN at under $US500,000.

It is one of the most famous stamps on the globe in ANY condition, and to have one genuine UNHINGED MINT from 1851 almost beggars belief!
As I said, in my view it was a bargain, and if I had the money I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.

Re: *POLL* What did this Canada 1851 12d Black QV just sell
There is a census of them on the Siegel website, here:
https://siegelauctions.com/display_census.php?id=37
At first, they are difficult to distinguish, but without doubt Ackland's "1928" stamp is the used example "3-CAN-11 Fault". This has narrow to touching margins and note the portion of postmark to the right of QV's head.
Provenance: Maresch, Lot 37, 11/2013, $42,000.00
Certificates: Greene (2000)
The provenance of this stamp can now be taken all the way back to 1928!

William Ackland died in January 1953 at the age of 80, so the auction sale in 1955 makes sense.
