SEEKING DIVERSITY PEER LEADERS: Graduate Paid Interns Program for 2018-2019
On a campus and in a world filled with conflict, division, and bitter disagreements, the Intergroup Relations Program’s Diversity Peer Leaders (DPLs) use the skills of dialogue to bridge divides and help resolve conflicts. DPLs facilitate small group dialogues between students (and sometimes faculty and staff) on divisive issues that really matter to campus climate – issues like race relations, cross-cultural communication, and more. Graduate students who serve as DPLs are responsible for creating programming for other graduate students in particular.
If you want to make improvements to UCLA’s campus climate, and you look forward to building relationships between people and groups in conflict, then being an Intergroup Relations Diversity Peer Leader intern may be for you! This position is open to both undergraduate and graduate students at UCLA.
IGR Diversity Peer Leaders are trained in dialogue and facilitation skills and have many opportunities to facilitate workshops and events on campus directly related to the conflicts and issues they feel most strongly about.
Some of the programs IGR Diversity Peer Leaders helped to lead this past year include:
• OUTlet, a mental health dialogue for queer communities; I Am The First, a dialogue series for first-generation college students; toxic masculinity dialogues; SolidARiTy, an art-based dialogue space; and more.
• DPLs also develop and lead workshops on identity, cultural communication, conflict management and addressing microaggressions for various departments and student orgs on campus.
Being an IGR Diversity Peer Leader can benefit your future graduate school experience or career as well! How? IGR Diversity Peer Leaders:
• Learn effective communication skills for highly diverse settings
• Become trained in conflict management and resolution
• Facilitate tough conversations between groups in conflict
• Initiate, manage, and run projects that help develop intercultural understanding
• Connect with other like-minded peers

• Gain valuable skills to put on resumes and applications
IGR Diversity Peer Leaders are paid as interns through the Bruin Resource Center starting at $13/hour! (30-45 hours/quarter on average), serving for the entire academic year, 2018-2019.
