A Day with Dutchess: Life Lessons from a Blind Therapy Dog Paperback – May 16, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
A Day with Dutchess is a children’s book inspired by the true life adventures of Dutchess, a blind therapy dog with a gentle and joyful heart. A gregarious and loving Golden Retriever with a smile to match, Dutchess is especially fond of her work with individuals with autism. She lives with her owner Mark in upstate New York.
In her first book, A Day with Dutchess, she shows her canine friend Droopy how small actions can make a world of difference. Join them as they work with children at the local autism center, sample treats at their favorite pet boutique and organize an adoption fair to help lonely cats and dogs find their loving forever homes. An inspirational tale for all ages, A Day with Dutchess teaches that everyone is truly special and can help make a better world.

Julie Klam, New York Times best-selling author of "You Had Me at Woof," says "'A Day with Dutchess' is a charming and heartwarming story that will teach kids about the wonders of therapy dogs and seeing past what some might consider a disability. It is a lovely book."
Bruce Littlefield, best selling author of "The Bedtime Book for Dogs" says "Dutchess and her tale are doggone delightful. Her story proves that no matter what hand, or paw, we're dealt in life, it can be used to help better the world."

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2013Really enjoyed this book. As a volunteer for a summer camp for low-vision and blind children, the story is one that they can connect to and be inspired to make a difference in the world no matter the challenges they face.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2013A very pleasant story that deals with kindness of many types. It will delight children and have adults thinking about their own values and how to "be" in the world!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2013"A Day with Dutchess: Life Lessons from a Blind Therapy Dog" is a joy to read. I would hazard a guess that the heroine of the story is actually named after the county of her residence, because she is not merely a dutchess. She is the QUEEN of resilience! I love the fact that the book doesn't belabor the fact that Dutchess is blind. She has overcome this challenge and focuses instead on helping others overcome theirs. It is a lovely story about the necessity of believing in oneself, the importance of using our strengths, and the power of unconditional love. This children's book is appropriate for readers of all ages. I hope that it will come out in hard cover, because I believe that it will become many children's favorite and would be a wonderful addition to any school library.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2014I use this book with my first graders. They love it. In addition to the story, the hidden tennis balls in the pages make it even more fun. I was fortunate to have the authors visit my school and read the book to all the first grade classes. What a great event. The message and story are so important. I hope there is another Dutchess book in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2013An enchanting tale with a charming cast of characters that will undoubtedly change all who read it for the better. In real life, Dutchess and Mark's sincerity, kindness, compassion and infectious positive outlook on life touch the lives of countless people in their local community. As in this story, they teach them that by maintaining a positive outlook, what may appear on the surface to be an obstacle, can in fact, be quite the opposite. This delightful book will educate and empower its readers to get out there, stop complaining, and do something to make this world a better place. It's a very important lesson I believe everyone can benefit from.
