A panel of tobacco control experts discuss their views on how the survey results impact smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction efforts. The Doctors’ Survey of more than 15,000 physicians in 11 countries revealed that, on average, nearly 77% of doctors mistakenly believe nicotine causes lung cancer, and 74% incorrectly believe nicotine causes a range of illnesses from lung cancer to COPD. These gaps in knowledge could thwart efforts to help smokers quit since only half of the doctors (55% on average) recommend over the counter nicotine replacement therapy.
