Spring 2015 - English Development Workshop Series
The English Development workshops assist international students with enhancing their speaking and academic writing skills in the English Language. Sessions are hosted by representatives from the Program in Academic English.

Space for these workshops is limited, so you must fill out an interest form if you would like to attend. If we are able to reserve a space for you, we will send you an e-mail confirmation with the location of the workshop.

Week 2: Wednesday, April 8th - Intonation: Conveying Your Intended Meaning
In speech, we use the pitch of our voice to convey our attitudes or emotions and to indicate to listeners whether we are making statements, commands, and different types of questions. In this workshop, students will be introduced to these various intonation contours and will have an opportunity to practice them.

Week 5: Wednesday, April 29th - Are You Listening?: Skills for Being an Effective Listener
Are you a good listener? Do your friends come to you with their problems, confident that you will be there for them? These are traits that go across languages and disciplines, and impact our daily lives. In this workshop you will learn how to put aside your own agenda, focus on your partners, help them in times of need, and celebrate with them in times of joy. These personal skills also aid in academics, business, and any other field which relies on human interaction.

Week 8: Wednesday, May 20th - Writing a Cover Letter: A Golden Rule to your Professional Success
Do we need a cover letter when applying for a job? Including a cover letter with your resume is considered the “golden rule” of job searching, and a good cover letter can make a difference. In this workshop, students will learn about writing an effective cover letter, including formatting, organization, and content.
