Everyday Idioms and Academic Phrases
Week 2
Wednesday, April 6th 2016
3:00pm - 4:00pm
Humanities Hall 303

Presenter: Anna Striedter

In this workshop we will examine everyday idioms that do not always make immediate sense to non-native speakers (such as "on the fly" or "play it by ear") as well as phrases commonly used in formal academic writing (such as "pay attention to" or "as a result"). There will be interactive games and exercises in which participants work in small groups to explore both types of idioms. Since most idioms involve prepositions, this workshop also offers an opportunity to review these little words that are so crucial in sounding like a native speaker.

Week 4
Wednesday, April 20th 2016
1:00pm - 2:00pm
Humanities Hall 303

Presenter: Gina Ruggiero

Have you ever found yourself at a loss for words when ordering a meal and the server speaks too fast?  Have you ever chosen not to return an item that you purchased and don’t need because the return/exchange policy is just too complicated?  This workshop answers these and other questions about everyday encounters at restaurants and retail stores.  You’ll learn how count nouns become non-count nouns when ordering your favorite beverage at Starbucks as well as how Americans decide on an appropriate tip/gratuity after dining.  You’ll also learn how to easily and confidently navigate through returns and exchanges at Target and other popular stores.  This workshop also allows you to actively engage in role-playing these common scenarios.

If you’d like to learn about how to make your writing more exciting with more varied sentences, please join us for an interactive workshop! We’ll talk about the main types of sentences in English and practice building interesting and even humorous sentences. You’ll gain confidence in switching up your patterns, and probably enjoy yourself, too.

Part of the university experience is interacting with a variety of people and in a variety of situations. Undoubtedly, the language we use to communicate with others in different contexts will change. This workshop will focus on two of these contexts: communication with friends and communication with instructors, and help students recognize and identify the appropriate language and vocabulary to use in these settings.
