Irish 60c Citizen’s Army 60c, 2014 Jack White stamp withdrawn rapidly

Post by RavenStamps »

Front page photo and article in the Irish Examiner one of the three Irish daily newspapers. A new Eire stamp error discovery.

OK they called me a collector in error, but publicity is publicity.

Ireland - Eire - 2014 60c Irish Citizen’s Army Jack White stamp withdrawn rapidly

Collector pays €3,000 for €9 sheet of withdrawn Eire stamps

Thursday, January 30, 2014

A career collector has wasted no time in trying to capitalise on An Post’s error last week after he spent €3,000 to buy a sheet of 15 Irish stamps with a face value of €9.

Padraig O’Shea, who runs a collectors’ shop in Cork, took the snap decision after he was approached with an offer to buy one sheet of 60c stamps that was bought at face value six days earlier.

The special edition stamps were released by An Post only to be withdrawn almost immediately.

The 60c Citizen’s Army issue was supposed to go on sale last Thursday, but the plan was halted when historians raised doubts about the image chosen.

An Post had believed the picture on the commemorative issue was of Captain Jack White, a former British army officer who volunteered for the Irish Citizen’s Army in 1913.

But when the image was circulated on Jan 22, historians said the man in the picture was not Capt White.

Mr O’Shea, who runs the Collectors Centre on Washington St, understands in a small number of post offices, the stamp was on sale for less than 10 minutes before they were withdrawn.

One of those who bought stamps approached the shop yesterday with a sheet he wanted to sell. "He is a client of mine, he said he bought them within 10 minutes after the stamps went on sale."

Mr O’Shea said he had been in the business for 30 years. He tried to verify the number of stamps circulated but could not get confirmation.

It meant that while there was no way of knowing the real value the sheet, he decided to trust himself.

He said as far as he knew, the circumstances were unique as no other Irish stamp was withdrawn having been available in such short supply.

Always nice to read those errors from the post offices. And they are not always withdrawn.

Nice story.....one can only hope they stay withdrawn!

Of course this fiasco may have been avoided if An Post released 2014 issue details earlier.

I can't speak for those who may be closer to the authorities but for mere mortal collectors details of the 2014 stamp programme were not published until 07 January.

Images of this particular issue were not available online until 22 January, the day before release.

Usually collectors can see new issue images and technical details for the quarter ahead via 'The Collector' booklet from An Post but this was not available until 22 January and posted online 23 January.

Only in Ireland.......

And here I hoped that people in the stamp issuing authorities would have learned by now to check their facts before they sent anything to print. Why didn't they ask the historians first?

I mean, we have had more than enough of these fiascoes in the past: Robert Schumann stamps with the wrong sheet music in the background, or the Legends of the West sheet where a stamp showed the brother of the guy who was supposed to be depicted ... just to name two. One such error should have been enough for the whole world to know how not to do it!

I wonder if any will be "liberated" if they are sent for shredding or whatever, or if An Post are suffering from "shrinkage" of the stock already.

Well not only in Ireland. :)

My guess is this ebay Ireland stamp will fetch over $US1000. And so it should. $1000 will look cheap in a year's time is my bet.

Unless a large number are out there - and that is the Roulette Wheel Question right now, $1000 is about right if only a few sheets were sold.

Image

New Zealand did a near identical thing a few years back.

They printed a set of 5 "Kapa Haka" stamps, and mailed them out to a number of new issue buyers, and charged their credit cards.

I just sold one of my 3 sets of 5 today for $A8,500 and the 45c coils and booklets stamps are of course a lot cheaper -

https://www.glenstephens.com/rarity.html

NZ Post had some Maoris criticise the cartoon-like designs, and the PO oddly chose to withdraw the issue at the 11th hour.

Same reason - images got into Media too late for wider comment to be made.

But dozens of sets of 5 were charged out and sold and mailed by the Post Office, as well as a bunch of self-adhesive booklets of 10, some single values not in sets, and peel and stick Coil stamps in rolls, and FDC of the st of 5, blank FDC's, and used/CTO sets.

The buyers of all these of course had legal right to sell them to the highest bidders, where and when they chose, and I certainly bought quite a few sets over the years, as they are globally popular.

They should be listed and priced in Stanley Gibbons, the same way this Ireland stamp will certainly be, I'd guess.

I'll see if I can find out what SG plan to do with the Ireland stamp.

For quite a while now (a year or two), USPS hasn't been scanning or tracking incoming registered mail from overseas, it just gets thrown into the regular mail stream. To a postal clerk with 'sticky fingers', registered screams "I'm valuable", unless its something like an envelope with the return address of a lawyer's/accountant's office, in which case you can expect it will just be documents.

Looks like someone made a nice profit out of me on these!

I had four copies picked out of kiloware which sold immediately to four different collectors (one Canadian and three French) when I listed them on an Internet auction site recently at 60p each.

I still have 13 kilogrammes of the same batch of kiloware unsorted so if any more come to light rest assured they will not be listed at 60p each or listed at all until the price settles.

These stamps were issued only a week back in another country to you, but you already had it on kiloware, and have since sold it online, after your auction ran its duration. :?: :?:

Are you SURE you are speaking of the same stamp?

I imagine that the stamp that was found in kiloware could have been the Irish Volunteer stamp and not the Citizen Army stamp.

I really do need a new pair of glasses! It was indeed the Irish volunteer stamp that I sold. Even so the kiloware I purchased is bang up to date - it arrived yesterday from my sources in the Irish Republic so I will be keeping my eye open for this one (the correct one) especially as I have another 30 kilos of Irish kiloware in the pipeline.

If sold at the Post Offices - even for a short time there are bound to have been a few hundred copies that found there way onto mail - so it is possible a few may surface. Anyway I have told my processors to keep their eyes open - any found and we'll split any profit made.

If Ireland had the collector base of China, this could turn into another "All Country is Red" stamp. :o Nevertheless, it will surely find a price point similar to the NZ issue (pro-rated to the fact that its a single not a set).

Sorry - should have put it in full

Protestant
Unionist
Loyalist

The other tribe in Ireland

I know these stamps refer to an event of 100 years ago, but it is still relevant to Northern Ireland. Events will be taking place in Larne in April to remember the landing of guns for the Ulster Volunteers (UVF) - set up to oppose the Citizen's army and similar groups.

The Ulster Volunteers went on to become the 36th Division of the British army in 1914 and their role is still seen, by many in both tribes, as vital for the division of the island of Ireland in 1921

The UVF is still going, though is currently on ceasefire.

I've tried to keep this post factual, apologies if I have given offence. I can be very offensive about this issue - but this isn't the forum.

Only the totally clueless Bunnies bid on anything pricey on ebay, until 5 seconds out via snipe.

The fact the Bunnies have been out in large force already, means this has a ton of Euros to go, when the savvy bids hit last second.

Why these silly footsie games go on amazes me.

You make one strong bid via snipe, and let the amateurs play kiddie games with each other, who always miss these kind of pieces, as they have no absolutely idea how to bid on ebay.

Why these silly footsie games go on amazes me.

Mainly collecting GB, working back from QEII. Often side-tracked into Japan, GB-era Hong Kong definitives, Ceylon and Australia pre-decimal.

It will be interesting to see if this sale will tempt any other copies out of the woodwork

It strikes me the buyer did rather well and got it for a good price, and assuming we don't see this issue re-released in it's current form, it's a stamp that will appreciate.

Hi. I'm a clueless ebay Bunny. I bid "just for fun", and pointlessly waste days of my time, playing pointless bidding footsies, with like minded dopes, and winning nothing decent, ever".

The price will depend on how many of the stamps were actually sold, I have heard of a copy being offered on cover in the Dublin area but no confirmed price.

You'd think but remember the reason they got in this mess in the first place!

Of course it could be An Post staff selling these... :D :D
