Sydney Stamp EXPO 2011. Stampboards Meeting April 3!

Post by Skippy »

(Admin note - Skippy - added meeting details below to keep it all in one thread!)

==================

I can't find a thread dedicated to this expo, so have started this one.

If there is another thread can a moderator please merge or delete this one.

I was just looking at the Expo website and was interested to read they are doing a revamp of the 1911 Sydney Exhibition cinder.
2011 marks the centenary of the First National Philatelic Exhibition and Congress in Australia and is therefore an important milestone in the history of organised philately in this country.

At this event special commemorative stamps were printed in sheets of twenty (four by five) in four colours being red, green, navy blue and pale blue and all were perforated gauge 11.25. These probably represent the first Australian philatelic souvenirs produced and very few sheets appear to have survived.
.....
...
For this exhibition we have recreated the 1911 vignettes with a slight modification but in similar colours, again in sheets of 20 with selvage. These vignettes are rouletted and fully gummed
But couldn't they find any cleaner examples of the originals for their website  , surely there are some nicer examples around ?
.....
Also shown below are examples of single vignettes. One of these single vignettes appears to be black, but this is purely a slight distortion of the true colour by the scanner used to produce the image.
....

and don't they look just like these on stampboards, toning and all.

Lovely cinder design, I'm looking forward to seeing what the 2011 version looks like :D

I'll be there probably on every day and of course there's the Palmares dinner, no doubt a Stampboards meeting and dinner plus other get together's of various kinds.

Should be a great Expo 8)

(Skippy - was going to start a new thread on this, but seeing yours was here, have amended heading a tad - hope that's OK?)

==================

Had a long and friendly call from the EXPO president Geoff Lewis yesterday, who was very pleased to offer us a spot for a Stampboards meeting.

My leaning was toward SUNDAY afternoon, but he thought Saturday might be when more folks were about, so we chalked that in.

However it we go Sat we will slightly clash with 2 other meetings in the vast meeting hall I now notice -

http://www.sydneystampexpo2011.org.au/events.html#meetings

Ben Palmer has very efficiently added us already to Saturday, as can be seen.

If we re-set for 11am - 12.30pm Sunday we clash with nobody.

ALSO if we have a meeting Saturday several might like to get together for a drink and bite to eat somewhere local after the show finishes. (Parking is free, and dead easy at the EXPO.)

HOWEVER several members will certainly be at the Palmares dinner Saturday evening. We are almost certain to be, Lakatoi4 will be, probably David Benson will be, and a few others etc.

If we have our meeting SUNDAY, anyone who comes in for just that day for the meeting, can visit dealers and exhibits until show coses at 4pm, and then we can head out for drinks and early dinner, and everyone can get home at a comfy hour!

So can we have a couple of FAST responses to whether Sat or Sunday fits you best, and I'll see if I can apologise and get us moved on webpage list.

Well David Benson phoned me on this Monday, and he raised this at the last steering Committee meeting.

With the kind assistance of Ben Palmer, we have been granted the Sunday midday slot, that clashes and overlaps with no other meetings - :)

On Saturday we seriously overlapped with 2 other meetings - one a very large one.

11am - 12.30pm. Sunday April 3.

I will be at the Expo every day as a volunteer worker.

If my duties permit, I will certainly attend the meeting and would like to go out after 4.00 pm for a snack and a drink (or three).

Yes the show closes around 4pm on the SUNDAY.

David Benson suggested a reasonable place to eat very close by - "Java" - in Randwick.

https://www.eatability.com.au/au/sydney/java/

First review is pretty bad but others seem better, and David says it is good in his experience. :D

Sounds like it is not a glam place, but for what we need seems fine.

Almost walking distance to the Racecourse, as we can see on map below.

I just phoned them and they are open Sunday afternoon, and a 'Banquet' menu is $30 a head fixed price

They will take a booking.

NO BYO charge, and there is a bottleshop next door they tell me .. and I think David told me it might be a pub next door even - The Coach And Horses" it looks like.

So my thinking is that we set an early time for dinner .. say about 5pm.

Then, those who need to get home early for family meals etc can readily do so.

Those that want to continue on for coffee or drinks can do so next door.

Anyone who is coming straight there has no issue.

Those who come direct from the show can rendezvous in the pub bar until 5pm.

If we agree on this place I'll email all members to tell them of the show - and tell them of the dinner, and suggest they post here so we get an idea of numbers.

Bother.

As Sunday is the last day of the Expo, I have just realised that I will be busy taking down exhibits from 4.00 pm till late.

Sorry. I'll still try to make the midday meeting.

Sounds good to me 8)

The last half from the Show up Alison Rd. to Avoca St. is fairly steepish. I'll be driving so I can give 2 or 3 people a lift from the Show if required.

Yes the images of the 1911 vignettes do not look very nice at all, maybe I should have cleaned them up in photoshop, it would take some time it do though.

But this is how they were emailed to me.

Melbourne had 800 sides and frames were empty 2 - 3 hours after the finish. The frames take longer but I believe they using a group for those. So as Sydney has 10% less with 728, should take similiar time to extract the exhibits. Jill Presgrave is a great Bin Room manager.

Gary,

I also estimated by experience 2 - 3 hours should be ample but Ed doesn't.

I don't think it was the Bin Room that will take time, it is the actual dismounting from the frames which all depends on how many people are undoing the frames. It was mentioned last night that there will be 10 casual paid workers to do the work plus the volunteers to handle the material.

It will affect those that wish to dismount and also to attend the Stampboards dinner.

David
I can assure you that from experience it can be the binroom that cause a bottleneck. In Fremantle 2004, there were teams with frames pulled down in their hands waiting 10 - 15 minutes to check them back in. It was a nightmare.
Sydney won't have that problem, Jill is one of the best, thus why we have her as part of the A2013 team.

So Gary can you take a "best guess"at WHAT kind of time frame it will be when Exhibitors waiting for their collection to be taken down, will be able to attend a dinner?

Is 6pm still sounding doable given no unforeseen dramas? The Restaurant is 2 minutes drive from the Exhibition.

Gaby (my life saver) and I will be there on Sunday, but not 100% sure, if we make it to the 11 AM meeting!
16:30 PM ....I have to pick my Dad (86) up at the airport, arriving from Switzerland for an 8 weeks holiday with us. :D

Insurance cover has been arranged, and the $100,000 'Moonlight Green' 1d Red will be on display at the stampboards meeting tomorrow, Sunday 11am at the huge "EXPO 2011" in Sydney.

We had a special chocolate cake made, with the stamp cleverly printed onto the edible icing, that will be shared at the 6pm Sunday Stampboards dinner for our 4th Birthday.

All members are invited to both.

More details on the new discovery is here - add a note if you will attend either please -
