WHAT is this common looking non-postal item worth?!?

Post by ozstamps »

Image
We all run across "oddities" now and again in junk lots, that are not postage stamps.

Usually hinged or sorted on the back page of albums or stockbooks, or in a glassine with "?" scrawled on it. They include Charity and Red X seals, Cinderellas, labels, revenues, duties, fiscals, and the like.

In general we have zero idea if they are 'any good' or not, and as a dealer I am lazy and just leave them there, and assume they have little value. And am generally proven correct!

So time for our Regular POLL of members.

Here is one I saw today.

If you saw one of these in the back of the album you just bought, take a guess at what kind of value it is worth - in your INITIAL looking at it.

Clearly you need know NOTHING about NZ stamps to take a guess at this guy. Indeed most NZ collectors will know as much as you most likely!

This item is as issued for all copies. There is no printing error, no paper error, no colour error, no perf error, no wording error, nothing unusual re the cancel - it is the same as all others.

As always in these polls you are to make a guess and submit that.

I'll tally them up and announce the answer in a few days.

Any comments that extend to anything much more than "I really have no idea, but I guessed X" will be removed, and the member posting them as always will be shot at 3am with a magnum by my trained team of Ugandan Mercenaries.

That is costly, and blood stains are very tough to remove, so please do not force me to do that. :)

Just basic comments only please - but DO make a comment of some kind please as it keep the thread on page 1 for the weekend. Guess away!

Glen

Since the currency in the poll is not stated...$500 billion Zimbabwe dollars and 5 cents AUD are probably about the same thing, so you could high- or low-ball this one and still be right.

Wow! OK, I used to collect those and don't remember a 5/- freight version existing. I'm not at home so can't look it up, but I don't think it is even on the "might exist" list that's in one of the books.

So it is probably really rare (and may well be the only known copy), but in a field that not a lot of people care about. So it isn't going to go super high, unless two deep-pocketed keeners started fighting over it.

I've guessed $5,000.

Railway stamps have their own following. This one seems to be quite a high value which in its own would be fairly scarce. A railway or revenue collector might just go up to 5 grand.

Well I'll take a guess and say $5000 catalogue value......, but I would think that would be for one in good condition.........

I wonder how often they would come up at auction........that might put a different value on it.

I am a real dummy when it commes to prices like this. But I know glen, he would not put an $5.00 item on for a thread like this. My guess is more likely $ 50,000.00

I have no idea but guessed $500.00 as I don't think there are very many insane Billionaires who collect this item. Supply and demand rule. If I am going to spend that kind of money I would want something that I specialized in and if necessary be able to resell at need.

5/- would have been a very high value back in 1894, so I'm guessing this is a very rare stamp.

My guess is $50,000 based on that, and the assumption that it's so rare that condition can be overlooked
