important self - help book although readers should not
interpret the contents of this book as a cure all.
The mind/body connection is firmly established by the
author through artful experiments and a thorough analysis
of the biochemistry of cells. At bottom, cells respond to
our thoughts and when great stress is present, the immune
system suffers. Biologically, the cells have a digestive system,
a nervous system, a respiratory system, an endocrine system,
a reproductive system, an immune system and a communications
system.
The book explains that the brain of the cell is in the
outer membranes. Here the brain decides what chemicals
to activate; such that different meanings are conveyed
as an outgrowth of managing protective modes or growth.
When we perceive bad things, the body goes into a protective
mode. Conversely, good perceptions or vibrations result
in good things happening.
The book cites specific examples of how people lived or
died by the placebo effect. In the end, the patient's
belief system about being cured was the dispositive aspect
in achieving the desired outcome. Although this statement
is interesting, there is no scientific proof that the meaning
we assign to diseases or the outcome of a disease is
dispositive for every person and every disease process.
For instance, a chronic diabetic may be able to achieve
a reduction of the grossest symptoms through a long period
of abstinence from sugar and carbohydrates coupled with
some medication. The health gurus; such as, Dr. Gary Null
have achieved marvelous results with diabetics, as well
as other chronic diseases and conditions.
In the ultimate scheme of things, a short to intermediate
term regression of the grossest symptoms must be
maintained by continuous changes in the diet; otherwise,
the patient may regress to the original undesired state.
At bottom, there is no cure for the condition; however,
there is a definitive series of steps aimed at controlling
the disease and the worst symptoms for as long as the
patient complies with a strict dietary regimen.
Mc Kim describes the all important fight/flight mode which
puts the immune system on hold. In this protective mode,
that which you don't want is happening. And so, the patient
must change the meaning of a situation to change the situation
for the better. Sometimes, this is easier said than done
for people in situations that are difficult to change.
i.e. divorce, unsafe environments, corporate outsourcings
etc.
