A Review by Anthony T. Riggio of the book “God's Patient Pursuit of My Soul” by Chris Manion.

For full disclosure, I know the author and have worked with her on writing clinics and attend Saint Rita Church with her. I know her husband Joe and am very fond of both of them. This being said, I waited a bit to read this book and when I purchased it from Amazon, my wife, Micheline read it first and did not remark about it until I read it. Many of the references cited in Chris Manion's book are books in my wife's library, several of which I read. After I read it, Micheline advised that she enjoyed it and agreed with me that it was both inspiring and revealing of Chris Manion's great faith and overwhelming search for answers that can only be provided by God.

The book is a memoir with a very detailed countenance of Chris' experiences of her search for God and God's answers to her. It raised numerous questions for me, among the most important: will I encounter God during my lifetime? Has God spoken to me in the past? Have I searched for these answers in my life? I have to say, I am not as diligent in my search as Chris, but I can not deny that God has not touched me in both small and great ways. I definitely identified with several of Chris Manion's questions and discovered answers.

I have not been to many retreats in my search for God, nor have I been spiritually motivated to answer or respond to this quest. I am in awe of those who do and are able to articulate in a manner that is plain and clear. Chris' experiences are so much different than mine and being a male I believe, is a real handicap for such searching. I believe that God is all around me and has had impact on most things I have done or accomplished. God has been very kind and good to me in so many ways, too many to list but to read the experiences of Chris' pilgrimage is both enlightening and spiritually moving.

Her book will be placed in my library and reached for again and again, as I strive to rise to the level of spiritual growth needed to have God talk or communicate with me.

This book is well written and a tribute to Chris' skills as a writer and her openness to the Holy Spirit insetting out the intermingling of her life experiences and her discoveries of her spiritual surrender and their important lessons in her life.

I recommend this book for anyone searching for an experience with God. I unhesitatingly give this book five stars out of five.

The author writes about her beginning relationship with God in 2004 when as she states: “He kept breaking into my life. It’s not that I didn’t ask for it. I know. Every time it happened I took days to recover. I didn’t know how to integrate it.” Chris Mallon’s life changed that summer day. Her spiritual director sent he to Sister Pascaline an amma, to guide and direct her. She was located in Oklahoma at the Osage Monastery. Sister Pascaline had participated in the Gethsemane Encounter during the early times with the Dalai Lama and Thomas Merton were good friends of her and she was willing to give spiritual direction to those who were making a retreat at her monastery. Sister Pascaline had a great love for the prophet Isiah and directed her to” “Today if you hear the Voice, harden not your hearts, but recognize love, praise, and adore the divine heart who calls to us through the prophet Isiah.” Chris booked a flight as her husband worked from home and her children were in their mid-teens so it didn’t create a hardship. The driver who picked her up from the airport was Sister Pascaline, who barely could see over the steering wheel. When they got to the monastery she was directed to make herself at home. The psalmist tells us to “Be still and know that I am God” the quieting down and being still is the role of meditation (what we call contemplation in the West) and this is where the Eastern traditions have so much to share with us. The author felt the stillness snuggling around her like a cat getting ready for a nap!
In the chapel on the monastery grounds there was a prayer circle which was a welcome alternative to the traditional architecture of churches and cathedrals. The decent into the prayer circle felt like a lowering into the arms of my Lord, like walking into the ocean, into waters that refresh and invigorate. After our prayer, Sister Pascaline set appointments each day for a half hour of directed spiritual guidance. The author planned the rest of the schedule on the beautiful grounds. “Where and when God finds you ready, He must act and overflow into you, just as when the air is clear and pure, the sun must overflow into it and cannot refrain from doing that!” Meister Eckhart
Each of the following chapters begins with a quotation that the author reflects and works on during her meditation. The reflections include the everydayness of her life and her awareness of being completely in the presence of Jesus all day. The wise priest, Thomas Keating, who works on centering prayer began chapter 6 with “The Spirit suggests what is to be done at each moment in our relationship to God, ourselves, others and the cosmos.” Many of us who have experienced the coronavirus, have had wonderful periods of contemplation and as Merton says: “Contemplation cannot be taught. It cannot even be clearly explained. It can be only hinted at, suggested, pointed to, symbolized…” It is a time of deep friendship with Jesus. As in other friendships, it has high and low points but it is continuous and constant and this is what Chris Manion has to offer us. This is a book that needs to be read by anyone who is interested in their spiritual life, their relationship with God and with others.

This book portrays the authors journey to attain deeper spirituality which resulted in peace and satisfaction. The author, Chris Manion, eloquently writes her story in such a way that it is hard to put down.

Chris explains her journey to learn centering prayer which is what I call meditation. She obtained a higher unification with God through using this technique. I have tried meditation before, but with Chris's explanation I expanded my practice with excellent results.

Life lessons are included in this book such as balancing work, exercise, spirituality, and home life. Chris explains how she subtly incorporated God into her multi-million dollar business.

This is an informative book for anyone who is in network marketing. Chris's spiritual journey rose along with her executive ranking. As she tried to help the people under her in the network marketing pyramid she focused on their goals and not her own which gave great results as she emulated Christ. Many of her spiritual life lessons are also included in this book.
