The transgender movement has hit breakneck speed. In the space of a year, it’s gone from something that most Americans had never heard of to a cause claiming the mantle of civil rights.

But can a boy truly be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine really “reassign” sex? Is sex something “assigned” in the first place? What’s the loving response to a friend or child experiencing a gender-identity conflict? What should our law say on these issues?

When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment provides thoughtful answers to all of these questions. Drawing on the best insights from biology, psychology, and philosophy, Ryan T. Anderson offers a balanced approach to the policy issues, a nuanced vision of human embodiment, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong.

He reveals a grim contrast between the media’s sunny depiction and the often sad realities of gender-identity struggles. He introduces readers to people who tried to “transition” but found themselves no better off. Especially troubling is the suffering felt by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later came to regret it.

And there is a reason that many do regret it. As Anderson shows, the most helpful therapies focus not on achieving the impossible—changing bodies to conform to thoughts and feelings—but on helping people accept and even embrace the truth about their bodies and reality. This discussion will be of particular interest to parents who fear how an ideological school counselor might try to steer their child. The best evidence shows that the vast majority of children naturally grow out of any gender-conflicted phase. But no one knows how new school policies might affect children indoctrinated to believe that they really are trapped in the “wrong” body.

Throughout the book, Anderson highlights the various contradictions at the heart of this moment: How it embraces the gnostic idea that the real self is something other than the body, while also embracing the idea that nothing but the physical exists. How it relies on rigid sex stereotypes—in which dolls are for girls and trucks are for boys—while also insisting that gender is purely a social construct, and that there are no meaningful differences between women and men. How it assumes that feelings of identity deserve absolute respect, while the facts of our embodiment do not. How it preaches that people should be free to do as they please and define their own truth—while enforcing a ruthless campaign to coerce anyone who dares to dissent.

Everyone has something at stake in today’s debates about gender identity. Analyzing education and employment policies, Obama-era bathroom and locker-room mandates, politically correct speech codes and religious-freedom violations, Anderson shows how the law is being used to coerce and penalize those who believe the truth about human nature. And he shows how Americans can begin to push back with principle and prudence, compassion and grace.

Editorial Reviews

Review

During this “transgender moment,” a government-enforced tyranny of false presumptions about nature besieges the American family. When Harry Became Sally provides the empirical information needed to refute the transgender suppositions, and―in a most original way―makes historic sense of this social misdirection by noting how the “gender-fluid” pseudo-scientific claims of today’s transgender ideologues derive from dubious arguments previously passed around amongst second-wave feminists. Learn from Ryan Anderson how another craze about the workings of the mind has come to beset American households and put thousands of people at risk.

—Paul McHugh, University Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

When Harry Became Sally is an eminently readable and insightful guide for all who find themselves perplexed by today’s debates on gender identity. Ryan Anderson’s analysis of the ideas that are fueling the transgender movement, their human costs and their political implications will be a valuable resource for parents, educators and policy makers.

—Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law, Harvard University, and author of
Rights Talk and A Nation Under Lawyers.

For an informed and sensitive presentation of gender identity issues,
When Harry Became Sally is a must-read book. It is especially a must for those in psychiatry, psychology and counselling.

—Paul Vitz, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, New York University, and Senior Scholar, Institute for the Psychological Sciences.

I always read Ryan Anderson with great admiration.
When Harry Became Sally is an always focused, informative, fair-minded, lucid and fact-based guide to just and reasonable policies in place of government- and corporation-mandated falsification of science, medicine, public records and history; suppression of free speech and family rights; and many-sided, often irreversible injustice to the vulnerable.

—John Finnis, Professor of Law & Legal Philosophy Emeritus, University of Oxford.

“Do no harm” is a fundamental tenet of medical ethics. But sadly―as shown by Ryan Anderson’s careful examination of the research―people with gender dysphoria are now commonly given treatments that involve grave health hazards and few (if any) lasting benefits. Regardless of political persuasion, all concerned citizens, especially parents, policymakers, and healthcare professionals, should give serious consideration to the evidence presented in this thoughtful and balanced book.

—Melissa Moschella, Assistant Professor of Medical Ethics, Department of Medicine, Columbia University.

Ryan Anderson forthrightly calls out the suspension of disbelief that has led us into ever more bizarre denials of reality, blindfolding our eyes and our heads in the name of political ideology and ensuring the suffering of the mentally ill. Everyone concerned with the welfare of children should read
When Harry Became Sally.

—Margaret A. Hagen, Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Boston University.

People who experience gender dysphoria deserve to be treated with compassion, kindness, and respect―just like everyone else. It is wrong to despise them, ridicule them, or disrespect them in other ways. As Ryan Anderson shows in his rigorously argued critique of transgender ideology, we can speak and stand up for the truth while loving those who identify as transgender as our neighbors.
When Harry Became Sally confirms Anderson’s standing as one of our nation’s most gifted young intellectuals, and without doubt the most fearless.

—Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University.

Ryan Anderson takes up the challenging topic of the “transgender moment” in a clear and biologically well-informed manner. He writes in a thoughtful and accessible manner, and he succeeds in his goal of providing “a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong.”
When Harry Became Sally raises important questions for anyone who is sincerely concerned about the wellbeing of those struggling with their gender identity.”

—Maureen Condic, Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy, University of Utah.

Your kids are at risk in the public schools
This is a must read for this time in our culture when fake agendas are eroding everything we know to be true about family and gender. Ryan T Anderson has included the latest research as well as personal testimonies of those that have fell victim to experimental treatments by those with an agenda that disregarded the psychology for their gender dysphoria. And took them down a road of destruction. Anderson addresses these individuals with the utmost dignity and compassion as their stories reveal the abuse of this transgender moment. I took my own cliff notes as to engraft this material because I know it will be quoted and referenced as we unpack this difficult, ever evolving, chaotic ideology that is assaulting our religious liberty, our parental rights, our children and our culture.

I bought this book to get a better understanding of the transgender issues that underlie recent media reports dealing with regulation of bathrooms in schools. The book is outstanding in presenting that material. In 213 pages, and an additional 29 pages of endnotes, it explains the evolution of the “transgender moment,” which argues that “male” and “female” are concepts determined by the subjective feelings of the persons under consideration, and not by biological facts. I was surprised by the large volume of material applicable to the subject.

The book is very well written. Despite the complexity of the subject matter and the unfamiliarity of medical and psychological jargon, the book holds the reader’s interest. Transitioning from one chapter to the next is flawless. It is a common-sense approach in which one anticipates the material that is coming in each successive segment.

The author summarizes the reasoning of the supporters of the transgender moment by quoting from their proposals and policy papers. By the same token, the author makes clear his own view that the transgender moment theories “are fraught with contradictions.” One chapter of the book presents the stories of six persons who transitioned to the opposite sex, only to detransition at a later time. The development of sex-related aspects of male and females, both before and after birth, are examined and considered in light of the claims that “sex is assigned at birth.” Also discussed are the long-term effects of hormone treatment and the absence of any scientific evidence to support gender identity theories.

One chapter of the book focuses on children with gender dysphoria, and the harm that may result from irreversible hormone or surgical intervention. The author argues for a better approach with traditional psychological therapies, noting that 85% of such children grow out of their dislike of their bodies without the use of hormonal or surgical treatment.

The cultural roots of the transgender moment trace back to feminist groups that were trying to achieve equality with men – an entirely different objective than the present problem.

The author concludes that there are five main areas of concern with the transgender moment: Privacy; Safety; Equality (in athletic competition); Liberty interests; and Ideology concerns. Inasmuch as one of the main approaches of the advocates of gender identity is to use governmental agencies and the courts to compel compliance with, and stifle opposition to their gender theories, these strange-sounding measures can affect us all by compelling compliance and by eliminating speech in opposition.

It is a book well worth reading.

I had the pleasure of reading an Advanced Reader's Copy of Ryan T. Anderson's latest book. This book is unlike anything else out there on the market: a thorough compilation of scientific research, personal anecdotes, and philosophical critique of the transgender movement.

Love it or hate it, you have to hand it to Anderson for making such a comprehensive contribution to this issue.

    Some highlights of the book:

Particularly compelling is the chapter on individuals who de-transitioned. No matter what you think about transitioning, on one point we should all be able to agree: We should seriously take pause before resorting to drastic and permanent therapies, especially for children. These therapies have long-term, irreversible effects and as such must be taken extremely seriously.

I found especially interesting Anderson's philosophical observations about the metaphysics of transgender ideology and social constructs. It is this argument in particular that I would love to hear from the other side on.

More than anything, this book is an invitation to think more clearly about human sexuality. I hope that even those who disagree with Anderson will receive that invitation, respond to his arguments, and let us talk about the transgender moment with honesty and civility.

This book is a must read for anyone really and truly interested in helping though who suffer from "gender confusion." Even for those who may very well disagree with its conclusions need to read this book for it offers up just why people who questions gender identity "inclusion" policies do so and what their concerns are. The book does an very good job of explaining both sides of the issue. The reader gets a good understanding of how the scientific process works, should work, and how and why the author believes it has failed in solving solving gender identity issues. A very good, sound book.

Anderson's book is clearly written, carefully articulated, and thoughtfully tempered -- contrary to what some uniformed, and almost certainly politically motivated, negative reviews have claimed. The logical progression of Anderson's argument is tight and he marshals a variety of evidences, drawn from philosophy, science, law, politics, psychology, and medicine, to assemble a deeply persuasive and compelling case. His analysis, again contrary to what some have claimed, is throughout measured and respectful in both tone and implication. I have enjoyed Anderson's previous work on Marriage and Religious Liberty, though I have not always agreed with his arguments or premises, but I must say that this book is easily his most cogent, coherent, and compelling work to date. Regardless of your political bent, or preferred position on the issue of transgenderism, this book is a must-read to ensure a clear and fully informed understanding of the issues at stake in what has shaped up to be a key (and contentious) social, moral, and political debate of the day.

This is an excellent piece of work, thoroughly researched and well reasoned and explained. It's a must read for parents, teachers, doctors, policymakers, lawyers, school leaders, mental health practitioners and those concerned about the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people increasingly subjected to the viewpoints of those pushing the idea that gender identity and biological sex are the same thing.

I sincerely hope people struggling with gender identity issues, as well as their families and those in a position to counsel them, will find this book.

While it's highly readable, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to fellow academics and professionals already dealing with these sorts of question.

As someone who has followed this issue closely for a few years, this is one of the best pieces I've read relating to it.

It's compassionate to those struggling, while very direct about those activists who a. don't represent the bulk of the very group they claim to serve, b. are on a mission to indoctrinate and confuse young children, and c. don't care about the destruction they're leaving in their wake. There will be increasing cases of transgender regret as younger children are encouraged to transition even though left to nature 80-95% will come to be comfortable with their own biological sex.

This is also one to read if you are concerned for the rights and safety of women, and even the very nature of 'woman' as a category in our laws and language.
