My stamps have HOLES in them !

Post by tonga2 »

No – not perfins or OS perfs – continuing the unusual stamps theme, my stamps have REAL holes in them!

In 1996 Canada issued a booklet for literacy with a jigsaw shaped hole in each stamp

Image
Image
Image

In 1998 USA issued a stamp showing Alfred Hitchcock – his silhouette at the top right is not printed, it is actually a hole in the stamp shaped like his silhouette

Image

In 2001 Luxemburg issued a stamp for Christmas – the “black” star at top left is actually a star shaped hole in the stamp
Image

In 2003 Hong Kong issued a sheet of stamps showing fish – the small “black” fish on every stamp are actually fish shaped holes

Image

In 2004 and 2005 France issued greetings stamps – the “dots” over each “i “ are actually holes

Image
Image
Image

In 2004, Argentina issued stamps with holes showing how their trees are disappearing

Image

In 2004, Leichtenstein issued a set of 3 stamps where each stamp had about 80 holes punched into it so that the stamps looked like lace

Image

And similar again for Leichtenstein 2007 Christmas set

Image

In 2006, Great Britain issued a stamp showing a hungry caterpillar which evidently ate a hole in the stamp

Image

In 2006 Indonesia issued a sheet showing soccer – each stamp contained a die cut soccer player which could be removed to leave a hole shaped like the player

Image

And in 2006 Hungary issued a S/S with a hole in the flag – when Russia invaded Hungary in 1956 and put its own symbol in the Hungarian flag, the resistance cut it out leaving a hole as seen in the S/S

Image

In 2007 United Arab Emirates issued a set of stamps with quite large holes in them

Image

In 2008 Malaysia issued a S/S (which was later reissued for the Jakarta 2008 stamp exhibition) showing a butterfly with holes in its wings – these were die-cut, and when the die-cut bits were removed, it left holes

Image
Image

In 2009 Sweden issued a booklet – one stamp showing a “black” star actually had a star shaped hole in it

Image

In 2009 Aland issued a strip of stamps – the “stars”are all holes

Image

In 2009 Taiwan issued a S/S with holes in the wings of the butterfly

Image

In 2009 Sweden issued another booklet where the “stars” were holes

Image

In 2010 Switzerland issued a stamp showing target shooting, and this time the bullets made holes

Image

And not to be outdone, the Swedes, who seem to like holes in their stamps, issued another booklet, this time with bullet holes from detectives

Image

In 2011 Taiwan again issued a S/S showing butterfly with holes in its wings
Image

And in 2001, Brazil issued an interesting S/S with “black” tree trunks which are actually holes, and a piece of wood stuck to the back of the sheet which can be folded as shown on the sheet

Image

So when you find holes in your stamps, it may not be moths, maybe they were just issued that way.

Remember – no OS perf hole jokes - there is already a thread on that subject ! This thread is about REAL holes – there are many stamps with perforation type holes – Netherlands has issued many of these, too many to show here.

Another fantastic topic.

Makes me wonder if you sold these if the buyer would complain that the stamps were damaged (or worse eaten by insects). Perhaps any sellers need to make it clear to potential buyers that the 'holes' are normal.

Brilliant stuff Greg, and can't say I knew about ANY of these before.

Just a tip to all members stating threads - if you limit images to about SIX per post, the page opens much faster if the threads get long.

i.e. for 15 scans, do 3 posts in a row, each with 5 or 6 images in each.

Can I bother you to add a scan of REVERSE of this one - I am intrigued to see where the holes are! 8)

Yes, similar to the earlier butterfly souvenir sheets Glen.

I do have the two you would like scans of - what resolution do you consider high Glen?

Greg, 600 DPI or so will be fine. If you might straighten them in the same mounts they are in they'll look good, with no Hagner 'tide line' across images.

There was a Netherlands Xmas issue discussed elsewhere on SB that had holes cut in it in the shape of stars.

I have a couple of the Taiwan M/S that I used on a parcel to myself from Taipei, and may have the HK fish sheet. There have have been another "holey" HK set, I don't recall offhand. Can't think of any issues from Thailand that did that, but then there's been a lot, can't keep up with them all.

Chris, it happened when Britain's Hungry Caterpillar was first issued; some PO customers complained about the holes. :(

I thought this was probably the best thread to post images of the anti-tamper devices which are now being applied to self-adhesive stamps to avoid their removal and reuse if uncancelled. Sweden's flower stamps last year have the Sveriges Post emblem of a posthorn - in this case inverted.

On October 7, 2003, Canada issued a set of 6 stamps and a souvenir sheet as a tribute to painter and sculptor Jean-Paul Riopelle. On each of the seven stamps, designer Steven Spazuk featured parts of Riopelle's great work "L'Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg," which the artist produced in 1992 upon learning of the death of his former companion, Joan Mitchell. The souvenir sheet also featured the image of a dove created from a unique perforation comb process.
