Customizing the Interstitial Cystitis Diet: A Confident Choices Book (Confident Choices for Intersti Spiral-bound – January 1, 2010

4.6 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

Guaranteed for delivery December 1, 2010 Julie Beyer, a registered dietitian and IC patient, understands the pain, frustration, and exhaustion that newly diagnosed patients often face. Beyer dedicates her work to distilling the science of IC down to a practical point of view. The book Customizing the Interstitial Cystitis Diet answers the plea, "Just tell me what to eat!" We now know that up to 11 million people suffer from interstitial cystitis (IC)/painful bladder syndrome (PBS). We also have validation that dietary modification can work to alleviate some of the symptoms of IC, in fact over 90% of patients say that diet affects their symptoms, and changing what they eat and drink can help! However, unlike dietary recommendations for other health conditions, the IC diet is more than just a good food/bad food list. Each patient is individual and just as each responds to different treatments, each patient will have a unique pattern of food triggers. Customizing the Interstitial Cystitis Diet guides patients through a process to determine their personal trigger foods while maintaining nutrition.

Julie Beyer, a faculty member of the University of Phoenix and a registered dietitian with a Master’s degree in Health Communication from Michigan State University, has been a featured speaker across the country on the topics of interstitial cystitis, self-publishing, and book marketing including the national education event for dietitians, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo in 2016. She is currently the Author's and Writer's Specialty Group Chair of the Academy's Nutrition and Entrepreneur's Specialty Group and has previously served as Editor of their award winning publication, Ventures. She is the author of four books and has served as book coach and editor of four more.

Drawing from personal experience with interstitial cystitis, Julie wrote her first book for IC patients in 2005. Confident Choices: Customizing the Interstitial Cystitis Diet provides valuable information about diet, stress management, and exercise, and continues to be a popular resource for interstitial patients around the world. Confident Choices: A Cookbook for IC and OAB is the long anticipated companion of that first book. Her third book about IC and diet, Interstitial Cystitis: A Guide for Nutrition Educators, provides the background and vocabulary that a dietitian or nurse would need to appropriately counsel IC patients on their dietary choices.

An activist in the interstitial cystitis community for nearly 20 years, Julie also provides dietary counseling to individuals and speaks at IC support groups and professional organizations around the country. She volunteers as a lead moderator for the Interstitial Cystitis Network, and writes about IC and diet for both the Interstitial Cystitis Network and the Interstitial Cystitis Association.

Passionate about writing, Julie has also published You CAN Write a Book: The No-Nonsense Guide to Self-Publishing and gives workshops at conferences and via webinars nationwide on the step-by-step process she has used to publish her books.

This is the very best book I own on Interstitial Cystitis, and I own almost all of them! It is easy to understand, very thoroughly educating of the disease, and includes many recipes that are both easy and delicious. Julie explains how to approach the IC way of eating and how to incorporate it into your life to be successful at reducing your pain. It sure helped me. I HIGHLY recommend buying this book!!

As a support group leader for those suffering from IC, I know that the conflicting information out there about what you can and cannot eat can get confusing. The truth is that there is no one "IC diet"; while some foods are more likely than others to bother IC patients, dietary triggers can vary greatly from individual to individual. Julie's book is one of the best ways those of us with IC can identify and document what our triggers are. It comes with a small collection of simple recipes you can use while you try the elimination diet. I recommend this book to all of our support group members, and I recommend it to you, too.

It's wonderful reading a book from someone who suffers from the illness. This book is a great purchase for those afraid to eat as to avoid a flare up. Julie is right that everyone is different, but this book is a great basis as to where to begin and know that you can live a life with this illness and still enjoy food.
