Best Kindle So Far
I bought the first Kindle when it came out and, while I liked it, I didn't use it that much because the page turn buttons could be too easily triggered, and the cover was somewhat clumsy to use. The second generation Kindle was a lot better, but I still preferred to read physical books with the Kindle being a solution for being able to have books available without taking up any more space (I still buy physical books, but most are donated to the local library, Salvation Army, etc. after I've read them). Next, about a year after it came out, I bought what Amazon called the "Kindle Keyboard" and was hooked! I began using the Kindle as a preferred reading medium over physical books and thought that the Kindle Keyboard couldn't be improved upon (I've since given a couple as gifts). I liked the storage capacity, the 3G capability and thought I wouldn't want to be without the keyboard. After reading more than seventy books on it I couldn't imagine trying a Kindle with less memory and only Wi-fi. I was wrong. I ordered this "4th Generation" Kindle earlier this year, thinking I'd have it for a backup to my Kindle Keyboard. Instead, it has become my much-preferred device. Storage room? With the cloud, it's really not an issue. I keep a few reference books on both of my current Kindles (the Keyboard and this one) as well as what I'm currently reading. I haven't had any problem with coming close to exceeding the storage capacity. While it would be nice to have 3G, it's not a deal-killer at all. I've already read close to 50 books on this Kindle and I've only found myself without easy access to Wi-fi once. When I'm close to finishing a book, I plan ahead and download a new one (or two) so that I'm ready wherever I happen to be. I also thought the cover for the Kindle Keyboard was better, but have found that I like the (Amazon official) cover for this one every bit as much or better. I don't need an elastic band to hold it closed (thought I wanted this, but it is really a non-issue). I flip it open, flip it closed, leave it folded back and just generally don't worry about it. That's what a cover should be - unobtrusive. The thing that makes this Kindle a real winner is its size and simplicity. It's easy to read one handed in any of the chairs in our house, at the island in the kitchen, at a restaurant at lunch or while lying in bed. It fits easily in my pants pocket, in a briefcase, laptop case, accordion file, sportcoat pocket, etc. The battery life (with "airplane mode" on - meaning Wi-fi off) is fantastic. I read anywhere from a couple of hours to as many as seven or eight hours per day and I generally can go three weeks (never less than two) between charges. I turn on Wi-fi (or turn off "Airplane Mode") to download new books or to allow sync'ing with other devices (I'll still use the Kindle app on the iPad when reading in the dark), and unless I forget and leave it on, the battery life is just fantastic. I also like the fact that charging just involves hooking it to a USB port on my laptop or desktop. I wouldn't mind having a way to know the percentage of battery life left, but estimating from the icon I'd say that I have at least 20% battery life and I've read several books since the last recharge going on three weeks ago now. Oh, and the time to re-charge from a depleted battery is only a couple of hours at most. Will I try the new "Paperwhite" with 3G? Probably. Will I miss the page turn buttons? Maybe. Maybe not. I thought the 2nd gen Kindle was where I'd stop (I even thought about buying a second one because I "liked it best"). The same was true with the Kindle Keyboard. Again, I thought it was the best version and wouldn't be improved upon (and once again considered buying a backup in that version). Today, I'm on this product page because the announcement of the Paperwhite made me think that maybe I should buy another one of the "Kindle 4" devices as a backup. Then I remembered the other two times I considered stocking up on the "tested and true" versions and decided to write this review instead. Maybe this will end up being my favorite Kindle. But if it doesn't, if the Paperwhite or even one of the Kindle Fires becomes a new favorite, I'll have paid my due respects to a device that has given me a great deal of pleasure. I recommend this Kindle without reservation. UPDATE: I've uploaded a video showing the Kindle being used one-handed. It's a little shaky (using the other hand to try to hold the camera), but shows the Kindle being used left-handed to "turn" the pages. From the other reviews I've read this doesn't suit everyone - I guess it's a matter of the size and shape of each person's hands. The video also gives some sense of the page refresh. I've uploaded a couple of still shots in the photo section at the top of the page that provide an idea of the resolution.

Pleased with shipping! My Kindle arrived ahead of the original time frame. The box was "dinged"- so I was nervous opening it. Pleased to see the Kindle was well cushioned.

Visually: I love the black outside color!!!! Also, grateful there was a choice!! ... only problem on opening and removing the plastic wrap: there was a large greasy mark on the back ... on the front there were what looked like scratches on the screen ...whatever the marks were wiped away with a soft anti-static cloth but I was thinking I needed a Lysol wipe lol

After charging and turning on the product-- I found that only one book was pre-loaded and bc I know I do have a large Amazon Library of books--only half were archived (not the seller's issue- IMO -i knew this before purchasing) ---I spent some time updating merging my Kindle for PC, Cloud Reader accounts to it. Also, bc of the size of my book library --I have found page turning and other functions are slower than say using the Kindle app for PC.

Having helped friends with their Kindle(s)/Ipad Kindle app/Ipod Kindle app etc.... as well as previously using the Kindle app for PC version for some time- I had some knowledge of how things generally worked. My usage issues came from the fact that I was used to having WiFi with 3g, Touch screen page turning, a back-light, --but I will adjust to such First World Problems :D :D

Text entry with the virtual keyboard and 5 way switch is very slow going but I don't anticipate using it often.

Haven't tried adding books via the USB cord ( I do have some purchased SmashWords books I would like to read on my Kindle) but again, not anticipating an issue. If one occurs -I will edit this review.
May 21,2013 Transferring books via USB worked perfectly. I had issues when I was emailing to my Kindle,so it was nice to add them via USB connection.

I do like the up/down buttons on both sides but wish they were labeled as up/down not the tiny arrows. It felt like an eye strain.

I LOVE the size of the screen for reading! I love being able to adjust the font size. I wish, however, there were more font choices and a choice of other backgrounds or text colors --not meaning full color but the choice of say black background with white lettering, or sepia or grey with a choice of black or white lettering.

I also wish there was a way to customize your screensaver, however the ones they have pre-loaded in black and white are enjoyable -IMO.

oh, yes and I do have "flashing" when the page turns which --being that I am migraine prone-- I didn't care for that-again, I will adjust.

I chose this Kindle version after reading ALL the reviews here plus a friend (who is into tech-y stuff plus travels often) told me this was the best one. Cant beat a personal recommendation!! He prefers it over his Ipad for reading, loves the light weight of it, loves the long battery life. I trust his opinion.

Overall, I am absolutely in love with this Kindle!!!! It hasn't even been 24 hours and its become my "baby". :)

October 15,2012: fixed the "flashing" issues I shut off the setting to the page refreshing / e-ink reset now it's just fine! I DO recommend shutting off WiFi when you don't need it. I have had it on continuously which equals charging every other day. It's still my "baby" and I love it more every day.

May 21,2013 This Kindle (K4) is still my "baby". The flashing issues are gone. I have been able to have more than 350 books now on it without any issues. Currently I have over 800 (Per the Amazon chart it could hold up to 1200). Before I owned this Kindle I never thought I would enjoy an e-reader. Now I don't know how I lived without it :) My suggestions to new Kindle owners would be purchase a good cover/case, a book light (if not built into your cover choice), as well as a screen protector. Enjoy!!

September 26,2013 update: I called Amazon yesterday. My Kindle "baby" is/was having major charging issues. I checked all the forums--tried every single suggestion there. I tried "reset". But the two most important times I needed it, I had charged to "full" (green light). by morning the power was down to only 1/4 charged. :( So with great reluctance, I made the call.

Spoke with (name removed for privacy-by me). She was so friendly, helpful, knowledgeable! She said Amazon would ship me out a new Kindle. (I was still within the original warranty time frame). She explained my new Kindle would arrive Friday --which would be less than 48 hours from my phone call! *happy dance* I was so happy I would not have to go a day without it.

She then explained the limited warranty on the replacement as well as all the details as to how I ship my original Kindle back. She also explained how my content would transfer over and what i had to do etc All the steps.

So why am I adding to this review? Because my replacement Kindle came TODAY! just a little over 24 hours from my phone call!!! I am just floored--WOW!!

The packaging on the replacement is/was pristine--much better than the first time.

I am currently transferring the content via the rep's directions....will update this review when finished or perhaps when I complete my portion of the exchange (the return of my original K4).

September 27,2013: The replacement Kindle is all established and content transferred. I cleared my original Kindle , boxed it for shipment----- followed the rep's directions went to the PO and i was told that I had to call UPS. so I was disappointed to have wasted a trip to the PO. I will be contacting UPS. So far the only glitch in this exchange. I have not as of yet had to charged the replacement and I have been able to use it without leaving it plug in so I am happy at the moment.

October 7,2013 update: so the replacement Kindle has been so far doing great battery-wise. I wish now I returned the original before. As for the return process--that has NOT been good!! I called the first UPS number to be given another UPS number (UPS customer service) the rep was VERY VERY helpful and nice at both phone numbers. Great job UPS! However, the tracking number that Amazon sent me for my return label I was told that is an invalid number and I would have to pay for pick-up and return! After a brief discussion, the rep gave me the phone number and address of the local UPS as she claims if I bring it there-I will not be charged. Of course, its not that local and I still have to pay for gas plus the aggravation of going and doing it-when I was told it would be easy. ....trying to do that tomorrow. Lets see what happens.

October 9,2013 update: was not able to go to UPS yesterday. made the ride today.

Walked into the UPS store location and I have to say BRAVO again to UPS for its friendly and helpful employees! I walked in, the clerk helped me, provided me with a receipt, and all was done in less than FIVE minutes! WOW!!!

My original Kindle is on its way home to Amazon. I STILL have not had to charge the replacement.( side note: other than my first day when I did the set-up I have not turned on WIFI)
