About the Author
Jim gained extensive real-world leadership experience in a "bootstrap" business career after studying Music and Literature in college. He started in low-level retail work and developed into a strategic executive in one of America's largest corporations. He distinguished himself by conducting a series of successful business turnarounds, which gave him the perfect laboratory to learn his craft and test his ideas.
Along this unusual journey, Jim was struck by just how challenging the path to leadership can be. He recognized that leadership is best learned as a result of a long-term commitment, learning through one's current experiences, and working through the process of learning in the company of other seekers.
Building on his extensive experience as a business leader, Jim developed the Path Forward Leadership Workshops built on the conceptual model of the Leadership Platform. This book acts as a study guide for Workshop participants, as well as a candid, down-to-earth, and useful guide for anyone striving to understand the essential art of leadership.
Jim has been married for over 30 years and has two adult children. He lives in Issaquah, Washington and can be reached at JimH@PathForwardLeadership.com.
Steve Motenko is a Harvard-educated leadership trainer and certified personal coach. Formerly an award-winning journalist, Steve is now a partner in Path Forward Leadership Development Services. He has facilitated management training experiences at Fortune 100 companies such as Boeing and Microsoft, as well as in government agencies, nonprofits, community organizations, and educational insti- tutions across the United States. In his individual coaching practice, he supports leaders who are serious about living into their highest aspirations. Steve makes his home in paradise--Washington State's Whidbey Island--with his wife Karen and their rambunctious puppy Lucas.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2010An essential read for anyone who truly wants to understand the art of leadership. Three reasons why:
1. The stories at the beginning of each chapter bring the concepts to life in ways that any manager can relate to - "Oh, yeah, I've seen that happen!"
2. The 12 "planks" thoroughly cover ALL of what it takes to be a great leader - from leadership to Self (your own personal growth), to Leadership of Others (your relationships), to Leadership of Teams (tactical and strategic management).
3. Each chapter includes exercises to take on (called "Making it Real"), which if you engage them will make you a better leader, guaranteed.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2010This is one of the most thoughtful and, at the same time, actionable, management books I've read.
I especially like the approach of starting with an internal self-examination of leadership qualities and strengthening those first. One has to start with that core, or none of the other theories of how to lead others will work, no matter how great they are.
Also helpful is the delicate balance the authors strike between being aware of others' needs and at the same time holding them accountable. They take a very realistic approach to this difficult topic.
I highly recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position or with aspirations to be a leader.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2010Success with any endeavor requires passion, curiosity, study, and application. If you make the leadership choice and wish to have success, then this book will be your means. I have read a lot of books on leadership, and I can tell you that "Land On Your Feet, Not On Your Face" is the definitive source. I am a trainer for a large corporation and attribute the positive influence I have had on those with whom I have worked, as well as my own development, to this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2010Land On Your Feet, Not On Your Face is a user's manual for becoming a great leader ... a primer for leadership effectiveness. In my management life, I come back to the ideas and exercises in this book over and over again -- whenever I have a management dilemma or issue. Every time I come back to it, I discover something new. Land On Your Feet is that rich. I'm a better leader because of it.
