Another strange one to guess the value of!
Well this time I may get more than 15% of the members guessing right!
This stamp above I noticed being sold recently.
As you can see it is not technically a stamp, but a HALF stamp.
It has a crease, and looks rather sad.
What you see is what you get. It has no paper, perf, design, or gum variations, or a missing colour etc. Someone simply bought a half stamp.
Someone simply offered this half a stamp and someone bought it.
You need to guess above WHAT it sold for. In AUSTRALIAN dollars.
As usual, any light hearted posts on the thread are welcome. 8)
Anyone that thinks they'll add more comment than that is wrong, as I'll delete it, and then shoot you at dawn .. so save us both some trouble.

OK, I'm guessing the other half of the stamp showed someone the Chinese decided was undesirable, like perhaps Richard Nixon or Hannibal Lecter. They considered just cutting the stamps in half and issuing only the good half, then decided to spend the extra 75 bucks and have it redesigned. So the stamp with Hannibal Nixon cut out is now a prized unissued stamp. The other halves of the stamp, which were all flushed down a toilet, are only known "no gum, as not issued."

Let's work on the other half and see if we can clean up. If we say it was Elvis, or Michael Jackson - we'll do far better on ebay.

That's useful to know because at least two Chinese stamps were issued as a pair without dividing perforations in 1964, somewhat bizarrely.admin wrote: As you can see it is not technically a stamp, but a HALF stamp.
Glen
But they weren't this (?)
I'm going for a high guess on the basis that it was this half that should have been destroyed?

I´m guessing it´s a rare forgery and have voted thus.
The forgerer was probably shot at dawn. (as I might be)
And what with chinese bidders being the ¨new rich¨ bidders....
It could be any of the higher bids.

Can't wait until someone offers the mysterious other half!
Although they can't post it - this one has the value on it.
Someone in the good books suddenly found themselves in the bad books?
Someone died? Either way why keep a half?
Someone had an eye out for his future "Super Fund" is my guess.
What era is the stamp? 50's, 60's?
edited in: A small point for clarification... is the poll in Australian Dollars, $US, or Hong Kong Dollars as many of our international members may not realise?

I've made a guess based on the period the stamp was issued plus some other factors which I'm not at liberty to divulge (being shot at dawn is not pleasant, and since I don't smoke I wouldn't even get a final ciggy ).

At first glimpse it looks like Mao with the little red book. But it doesnt quite look like him. Maybe this guy in the pictured stamp is the bad egg, with the doppelganger good guy happily getting his face franked all over China.
Eight seems a low denomination. Common use from a billion Chinese letter writers would mean someone had to do a lot of sissor cutting on this issue...

ahem...admin wrote:You need to guess above WHAT it sold for. In AUSTRALIAN dollars.
Anyway, my thoughts: I had originally thought the stamp was just *VERY* left-centred, until I read that it's only half a stamp. Personally, I wouldn't buy half a stamp myself (unless it looked nice perhaps - then maybe 3¢), but if the government decided to be rid of the other half and I had to post a letter I probably wouldn't have much choice (not that one has much choice in China anyway...)
That little Red book everyone red during the Cultural revolution (1966-1976) is full of Mao's quotations and ideas. (Yes, I must admit I did do the Chinese Revolution last year at school - looks like I actually remember something ) I think it's been halved on purpose, probably an idea of someone in the Government. Don't know what the Chinese characters mean below, but perhaps there's something written on the over half they didn't like? That chap in the picture isn't Mao Tse-tung, though I know he looks familiar. Maybe Zhou Enlai? But he's obviously some important figure, promoting the "Little Red Book" This is one of those expensive Cultural Revolution stamps, basically propaganda really, but I'm not sure which one.
Then again, if this stamp has been halved because there's something on it someone doesn't like, then perhaps this is that side which is not liked? I think there were some of Mao's mates who turned against him during the 60s and 70s, but again, I don't remember who.
As for price - I think either not cheap, or Glen's just joking around... (just trying to be non-specific, or I'll be shot at dawn! )
...Just my rambling thoughts

Look like reasonable price for a stamp with a big blue sky as it's background behind a man who would say red is the only colour.

Big Blue Sky = Big Big Mystery = Big Big Price
You are highly unlikely to find the other half in kiloware.
But you may find things such as this (sold at the same auction) -
SOLD for HK$2800 (US$360). The E index in the cancel was previously unrecorded.
Or this piece of junk fit only for the bin with the torn corner -
SOLD for HK$3200 (US$412). The stamp isn't even a spacefiller, but the CC index in the cancellation is the key. Cheung Chau, earliest recorded date.

The thing driving the price on these scarce postmarks is the fact that in many cases the rarity factor is RRRR. There were quite a few examples in the sale that hand been favour-canceled, and back-dated at that...the original owner had an inside connection at the post office with access to the hammers...in the case of some the strikes, they are unique though.
Amazing that a post office could have been operated in the Geo V period and no examples of the stamp remain. Its not like we're talking about a remote village in the Outback in Victorian times populated by a couple dozen miners who were either illiterate or just not letter-writers.
The chances of finding some of these strikes in kiloware are probably about the same as finding the other half of the missing stamp that started this thread, but you never know and we all live in hope. 8)

I need more information Glen? Such as who is selling it for starters? ie: if it were your goodself and in light of the Australian Exchange rate - (statically knackered for some years now 8) ..) I'd guess you were giving it away.
There are just too many factors here to consider (and I am now on full time Morphine )
so it does add a little to the confusion.
er if you do happen to be selling it - I'll place a solid bid of AU$50 now ... Scuzz

Lot 1173 China (People's Republic), 1967 unissued 40th Anniversary of Establishment of Jing Gangshan Revolutionary Base 8f. Chairman Mao & Lin Biao on podium overlooking Tien An Men Square multicoloured, the right half of the stamp, wonderfully bright colours on fresh white paper, unmounted mint with full pristine original gum, light diagonal crease, very fine and exceedingly rare. Yang note following W84.
Estimate HK$ 600,000 - 800,000
THE RAREST OF THE FOUR TREASURES OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION.
Popularly known as the "Big Blue Sky", this stamp was intended to be part of a set to be issued in September 1967 to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Chairman Mao's and his Autumn Harvest Army joining forces at Jing Gangshan in October 1927 with Zhu De and his Insurrection Army of August 1 Nanchang and establishing the revolutionary base there. The circumstances surrounding the issue's production and cancellation are shrouded in mystery, including even whether the set was to contain two or four stamps, although apparently all copies were ordered destroyed. One explanation is that the issue was cancelled because the theme with Tien An Men tower had no historical relevance to the intended issue, while another is that the omission of Zhu De - whose inclusion would have met strong opposition from the Gang of Four - from the set was not proper. Another theory is that when presented with the proposed stamp, Lin Biao reportedly wrote not to issue it. A final theory is that the Ministry of Post and Communications decided to issue a set of four stamps on 8 September 1967 marking the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of Jing Gangshan Revolutionary Base, but the designs were not approved in time, so the issue was cancelled and the stamps destroyed. There appears, however, to be other evidence that the issue actually received the approval of the Central Authority in August, plates were made, proofs printed and the stamps prepared, but the issue was inexplicably cancelled. In any event, apparently orders were given to the printers Beijing Stamp Factory that all stamps were to be destroyed. Only a few examples of the above stamp survived; none are known of any other value in the set. It is believed that the destruction of the stamps was not carefully monitored, and proofs of this stamp with Lin Biao were taken away.
Realized HK$ 1,900,000 (Around $A300,000!)
Option 8 .. and despite it being mentioned and photod a half dozrn times in nearby threads only a THIRD of members guessed right!

Re: POLL - another strange one to guess the value of!
I just can't help but think how easy it would be to forge these cancels where that amount of money is involved. And how difficult would it be to obtain a genuine certificateOrmond wrote:
SOLD for HK$2800 (US$360). The E index in the cancel was previously unrecorded.
SOLD for HK$3200 (US$412). The stamp isn't even a spacefiller, but the CC index in the cancellation is the key. Cheung Chau, earliest recorded date.
Still I've been hoarding every stamp from HK and China that was ever in any mixed lots I've bought, thinking that one day collectors of that area would have a LOT of cash to spend. Looks like that day has come, so I really must start to go through them now

Armarantine78 - Interesting avatar you've got there! Perhaps we can try guessing the value of that one?

LOL...! It was a measley $59 for the set, hardly anything to write home about. If you can guess higher for it, please do. LOL
