Fans of Jane Kelly's fictional sleuth, Meg Daniels, will delight in this latest edition to the author's series of mysteries located in various New Jersey shore resorts. Meg remains both perceptive and daring and has not lost her sharp wit and snappy observations. This latest case finds Meg and her paramour/partner Andy holed up in an Atlantic City hotel/casino, where Andy has taken a job as a security consultant and Meg, seemingly along for the ride, quickly finds a new mystery to explore. The case rolls out of a plea from a friend of the couple's, who wants them to look into his mother's disappearance during the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City. The plot evolves amid factual scenes and figures who were at the convention that nominated Lyndon Johnson 50 years earlier, but also hinges on the lesser-known conflict over the makeup of the Mississippi delegation, which had routinely disenfranchised African Americans for decades, but who were demanding proportional representation, particularly in the wake of the violent Mississippi Summer that had cost the lives of three civil rights workers.

Although "Missing You in Atlantic City" is a consistent and page-turning follow up to Kelly's earlier Meg Daniels mysteries, it is also a bit darker and features some nastier characters. However, there is much of the familiar lighter touch and humor as Meg again manages to put herself in danger while pushing ever closer to the solution, her suspicions shifting from one suspect to another. Meanwhile, her relationship with Andy has grown and continues to do so my novel's end.

Mystery fans, especially those who have followed this series since its start in "Killing Time in Ocean City" will delight in sharing this new adventure with Meg and Andy.

I’m so happy Meg and Andy are back to take us on a new adventure, this time in Atlantic City, which simultaneously takes us back 50 years to the 1964 Democratic National Convention. The significant events in and around this convention are not lost as Meg investigates the disappearance of a young mother. For those of us old enough to have experienced the early fight for civil rights, the brutal loss of a President and the first Presidential election afterwards, events Meg uncovers along the way are reminders. For those too young, the historical detail will be enlightening as well as entertaining. Meg is at the top of her form but Andy, maybe not so much. He does come through in the end though.

I have one question for the author. What’s next?

I came in on the middle of this series, but enjoyed the book so much I intend to go back and read the previous books. Jane Kelly has a light, humorous touch, but never descends into silliness. Her sleuth, Meg Daniels, is smart, tenacious, and easy to relate to. Though she's supposed to be relaxing while her partner, Andy, works at his security job, she soon finds a mystery begging to be solved. She travels up and down the Jersey Shore trying to help a still-grieving father and son find out what was behind the disappearance of their wife/mother fifty years ago when the Democratic Convention was in Atlantic City. In addition to showing a modern (and obviously much loved) Jersey Shore culture, Kelly uses well-handled flashbacks to explore the mood of the the area fifty years ago, including the Democratic Party, still recovering from the assassination of JFK, and the emerging Civil Rights movement. Her characters are varied, well-developed, and totally believable.
