PNG stamps part of the current Air Niugini “PARADISE” Magazine

A writer from Papua New Guinea’s “PARADISE” in-flight magazine contacted me a while back, re a story on their stamps.

These folks generally mess many things up, like the GRI overprints in World War TWO etc, but overall a bit of a plug for stamps, and a lot of folks read these airline magazines, and who knows a few new collectors may result from it all.

I rounded him up a good number of pix to add to the story.

The rare New Guinea “Wahgi” Flight cover shown, a member here bought for near nothing in one of my famous junk cartons, and later sold it back to me for a very sizeable sum, and a leading member of the judiciary is now the happy owner!

The magazine front cover with the Huli Wig Man bought back memories, as I have been lucky enough to have flown up a couple of times to the "Mount Hagen Show" in the past, deep in the highlands.

It is like stepping back 100 years in time, it really is. Only 100 or so tourists, and about 20,000 locals, all there to see teams of tribesmen from all over the country strutting around with full feathers and drums and regalia etc.

The Huli Wig Men were THE fiercest looking of the lot! The story is the huge wigs were make from the hair of other tribesmen they had killed. Huge guys, so would not surprise me!

I drove from Mt Hagen to Goroka, and then to Madang a few years back, and it is so dangerous we needed to have 2 or 3 young fit bodyguards, and a driver with us, and welded steel grid sheeting on all windows of the 4WD.

Always good to get some free advertising for collecting, particularly if it involves that incredibly interesting part of the world.

And I'm happy to be part of that band of philatelic "historical sleuths" digging up often very difficult to find information. It's a challenge that has its rewards 8)

Thanks Tony .. I'll pass it on to the collector who now owns that amazing WAGHI First Flight cover that was in the junk box - he'll be very interested to see that. :)

Your copy is on its way to you Glen ... Let me know when it arrives please.

I grabbed 5 more copies for anyone interested in owning a copy of this magazine. Whilst it obviously didn't cost me anything to obtain them other than some excess baggage charges on my domestic flight here in PNG due to the weight, I am happy to give them away free (not including postage) to the first 5 Stampboards members that ask for them and show a proven interest in PNG stamps.

Its a 150+ page glossy magazine that is very well presented and quite weighty (500+ grams) so postage wont be cheap.

The one I have sent to Glen has cost me K90 in postage (about $45 AUD) and thats too my neighbor country and that's NOT registered!!!

If your interested and happy to cover postage costs, let me know and the first 5 will get them.

Cheers.

I would be happy to have one and pay postage.

I have e-mailed you and have bought PNG and earlier from Glen a few times, and Lakatoi Lover a while ago.

The last lot from Castlecrag disappeared into the filing system, but Margo will find it, and I have been suitably recompensed with some other nice purchases. :D

Even surface mail would do, but I don't think it exists in some places. When I lived in Cooktown I could pick it up from Daru or TI as the prawn boats and crayfish were up and down the coast.

That was before mother ships and dry freezing of prawns. The prawn trawlers would follow the prawns up the coast and then go to the Gulf to fish for Banana Prawns. :!:

Great and innovative offer Tony ..... and knowing you, you will ensure recent and elusive PNG stamps are affixed and neat cancelled ... used postally on a large cover, they will be worth a lot more than the face value. :)

PNG Kiloware is the most expensive on earth. :D

I am trying hard Glen although I am at the mercy of PNG Post and their staff.. Directions are to place as many different stamps as possible on the A4 size covers so hopefully the directions are followed. Guess we will see when yours arrives.

Wolfgang has requested some high Kina value stamps rather than quantity so I am going to find out tomorrow what they have available for his.

The good thing is my wife is flying back from the Philippines in 3 weeks so I may be able to snag some more copies if she can carry them. :D

2 down, 2 to go. (1 extra put aside for Raz depending on the postage charges for 2 copies)

Tony has explained the postage rates and two copies would come in at over 1KG and each gram is costly and no stamps can be used for over 1kg. :(

Nearly as ludicrous as Aust Post. About par for postage costs.
So it's one copy for me. So three still available.

I would prefer the same as Wolfgang in general, but whatever you can manage will be fine Tony. Thank You. :D

Ha! Well looks like they paid a great deal of attention Tony. ONE stamp used.

Had this on my desk to scan up and finally got there - sorry! Many thanks - a most interesting magazine. 8)

Just a practical tip for sendings overseas with high value franking.

I have urged folks for years to place stamp WELL in from corners.

There is no RULE saying not to!

Tony's helpful assistants placed it far top right so it sadly got bent by the contents inside rubbing against it in transit, AS WELL as copping the annoying mail centre ink jet sorting cancels here.

Had it been placed in 2 or 3 inches from each corner the ink jets would have missed it and stamp stayed flat and perfect. :)

Mailed it back to him this week enclosed with an order as a nice genuine use of a high value, can't be too many out there at all!

Thanks for your help, Glen

Wow Glen, I can't believe that. Going to give my staff a serve swell, they were given strict instructions what to do. I didn't even know they had a 90K ($45) overprint stamp.. sheesh. I will need to go buy some now..

Glad you liked the mag. Good article btw. :D

Please let us know what you were able to acquire.
The overprints were available at Post Offices, but not sent to collectors.
The PNG Philatelic Bureau has kindly supplied an image of these, although it is not strictly correct as the year of the horse stamps were available from the Bureau.

The good news is, you can ask for a reprint. It will be costly however, as you have to order at least one full sheet (usually 25 stamps). So, including tincoll's example, there won't be much change out of AUD 4,000.

The K15 has an interesting double overprint!

These stamps will be the PNG classics of the future. I think worth the $4000 investment for a full set of sheets.

And I think worth the $45 shipping too for a used K90 stamp. If it survives the trip undamaged of course.

I mailed Tony back the entire cover, not just the used piece snipped out.

As the overprint was basically unannounced it seems, and the highest face value ever from PNG it seems ($50) to have ever been issued, solo use on a real mailed cover is probably unique.
