Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 6th through 12th grade students are redefining possible at our charter school in Texas. Many come from low-income families and struggle with a variety of issues before they even walk into the classroom. As a Reading Interventionist and the school’s librarian, I’ve seen all of our students embrace a whatever-it-takes attitude to ensure their personal literary growth.
Our students are hard-working, determined individuals with a desire to attend college; many would be the first to do so in their family.
Our goal as a school is to provide rigorous curriculum, build meaningful student relationships, and provide experiences outside of the classroom as we prepare them for college and beyond.
My Project
As we transition back to school, one program our students would love to see continued is the annual reading competition, entering it's 9th year. This program is tracked through Accelerated Reader, where students take a quiz after finishing an independent reading novel to track the number of words read throughout the school year. Once students reach one million words, they become a member of the "Millionaire Club" and earn their shirt -- a goal each student works hard to meet year after year.
The donations from this project will help our campus keep it's annual tradition of rewarding students with a Millionaire's Club Shirt, all while building excitement around reading and improving students' literacy skills.
Reading is a skill students will continue to develop over the course of their entire lives. It is crucial for students to gain a strong foundation in reading to succeed in middle school, high school, college, and beyond. Many of our school's students have catching up to do as they are anywhere between one to three grade levels behind in reading, and I am determined to see that they leave middle school and high school reading on grade-level and with a genuine love of reading through this program of incentivized reading.
As our community enters this recovery period in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we hope to give our students something to look forward to through the ongoing hardships.
