Coronavirus Prep Plan

This is not medical advice and is just my opinion on what to do. Please do as much research as you can and make your own thoughtful decisions, and obviously don't do anything medical without consulting a doctor. Thank you to the many people who have helped so far. I will try to update this document as I learn more - please help me by sending me useful info.

I have highlighted what I feel are the most important/non-consensus items on this list
5
My overall view is not that there will be an apocalyptic societal breakdown, but that there may be temporary disruptions of normal services as well as a profound shortage of hospital beds. I have heard from medical professionals that the US hospital protocol will be to keep people at home until they show a fever for four days, and then admit them to a hospital. If there is a significant outbreak this will quickly swamp the 950K available hospital beds and 135K ICU beds in the US. Doing the math, if 10% of the public catch Covid-19 at one time and 10% of those require hospitalization, that's already 3 million people (plus all those already using hospital facilities).

This plan has the goal of allowing self treatment of family members at home for as long as possible if there is no way to get to a hospital (e.g. Wuhan, people being welded into their apartment buildings). The material here will be useful to keep victims and families as comfortable as possible in a world where hospitalization is not possible (except for acute cases?) and where others are unwilling/unable/unavailable to enter your residence to help you, and you are unable to get services you normally receive at home or can travel to obtain. That having been said, it does appear that early hospital treatment, if available, is desirable. It's very important to get proper treatment early before major lung damage occurs (according to first hand reports)

In terms of medical care, the most significant items are the symptom relievers (most or all of which come from China and will be disrupted-in China ibuprofen was only available in hospitals, and in the Netherlands I am told you can't get expectorants and cough suppressants) and the devices to keep someone breathing. My view is that the oxygen generator might be the most useful item on this list, because it mimics the first line treatment (as far as I understand) that you would get in a hospital. If nothing else, buying most or all of the items here will be useful in other situations, and altogether don't cost all that much.

My understanding (again, I'm not a doctor) is that lack of oxygen is a major danger of Covid-19. The steps to treat this are to provide a cannula (what we suggest here), then intubation (requires sedation and can only be done in hospital), then direct addition of oxygen to blood ("oxygenation like dialysis"). That's an ICU situation. Hydration is also important (diarrhea can be a symptom) and thus rehydration electrolytes are helpful if you have to self-treat.

I hope this list is useful. Stay safe, healthy, and good luck.

A note on antioxidants: One of the results of my exploration of this topic has been that I have learned a lot about a few dietary supplements that seem to have remarkably positive impact on overall health, as well as being powerful anti-viral agents. The three I've listed here: elderberry/zinc/Vitamin C complex; Quercetin; and N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC); are inexpensive and appear to me to be worth taking daily whether or not we are in a coronavirus crisis. I encourage you to check them out.

Chloraquine - early evidence suggests there may be potential for this anti-malarial drug to have anti-coronavirus impact. Keep checking on this and consider asking for a prescription. Canadian pharmacies might be a good source for this."Breakthrough on coronavirus" https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32074550Where it still works: https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/travelers/country_table/g.html
36
Betadine Sore Throat Gargle or similar - shown to be effective against coronaviruses when still in throat. Use at first sign of sore throat
