- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm so grateful this book exists. It is inspiring and helpful in equal measure, and that is no small feat. It has a personal quality that engages me as a reader, and great clarity about concepts that I can absorb and use. It gives me hope to read how Omidian has been able to help people even in inhumane conditions. It gives me optimism to read how much people can do on their own, when they are shown how to tap into the resources they already have within themselves. And it empowers me to be in the world more effectively myself: with Omidian's ideas, I can do better not only at helping others but also at just relating to people in my everyday, small-scale interactions. I'm immensely grateful to the author both for the work she does and for taking the time to write and teach about it. Thanks also to her cohorts for supporting her in doing so -- for example, Nina Joy's illustrations are priceless -- and to Focusing Initiatives International for publishing it so we can all benefit.

Thank you for the care in which you put into this wonderful book. I loved the interesting way you tell your own story and the clarity with which you describe the exercises.
I wish you much success with this wonderful new resource.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2017Format: PaperbackTraining manuals are not easy to do, and Reaching Resilience is extremely well done. The language is clear and accessible, the exercises precise and easy to follow. Pat Omidian's sharing of stories from her own experiences in different countries are always engaging and instructive. The practice of Focusing, so difficult to describe at all, is effectively presented by keeping it simple, finding new language and images, integrating fresh steps like finding a calm place and gratitude, and – especially – avoiding jargon. The presentation shows the clear influence of the Muslim cultures in which it was developed, but the principles and exercises are universally applicable. A way of doing community development that emphasizes the ability of disadvantaged and traumatized communities to empower themselves, drawing on the resources of their own culture. The exercises can easily be adapted to enhance existing training curricula.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2018Format: PaperbackHere's what I love most about this manual... the way it combines clear and detailed instructions, with the gentle tone and spirit that we need, when doing trauma healing work... while the manual is framed as "community wellness", and I fully respect its strengths-based focus, the reality is that Dr. Omidian has developed this work in partnership with communities who have endured and survived significant amounts of trauma, from both war and from structural violence. So the gentleness, warmth, and healing spirit of the simple yet powerful activities that she describes, are particularly significant in these contexts... may this work find its way into the hands of those who can apply it wherever it is most needed!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2018Format: PaperbackReaching Resilience provides an eminently accessible model for restoring the spirits of traumatized people successfully. I give it extra credit for building a model that ordinary people can replicate without requiring excessive supervision by experts in related field. I'm intrigued to see it in action or give it a try!
