Background Information
Maryland law requires 180 school days. As a result of a change in the Primary Election day to May 14, 2024, SMCPS has to adjust the school year calendar for 2023-2024 to reschedule that day in order to meet the 180 day requirement. Secondly, Maryland allows for up to eight (8) days of the school year to be scheduled as virtual learning days. SMCPS piloted two days in the 2022-2023 school year: April 21 (survey) and May 12 (survey).

The calendar committee presented recommendations for adjusting the calendar and this was shared with the Board of Education on June 21. The proposal includes moving the final day of the 2023-2024 school year to June 13 to adjust for the Primary Election Day and the conversion of four early dismissal days to virtual instruction days. The Board will review this proposal again and any feedback at its July 19, 2023 meeting.
