This is your Brain on Adolescence: Enhancing Skills and Knowledge in Adolescent Clients

Providing effective treatment services for adolescent clients requires a combination of both specialized knowledge as well as the cultivation of a “teen friendly” mindset and collaborative, partnering approach.  Attendees will enhance their knowledge, confidence and comfort in working with adolescents, particularly those with substance use/abuse histories.  Participants will gain an appreciation of the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social factors that characterize the adolescent years and can be used to improve therapeutic alliances and interventions.  This will be an interactive session where participants will have an opportunity to engage with each other and discuss treatment strategies.

Trauma Informed Practice with Adolescent Clients

The majority of those receiving behavioral health/substance abuse treatment services have a history of trauma. Understanding the impact of trauma is vital to providing effective treatment. Participants will increase awareness and knowledge concerning the signs, symptoms, and consequences of traumatic experiences, and examine key intervention strategies to effectively work with those who have experienced trauma. Special attention will be given to cultural considerations, awareness and assessment of suicide risk, and the importance of self-care for providers to prevent vicarious or secondary trauma. This is an interactive workshop, with ample time for discussion and sharing of ideas and experiences.

May 14 (morning session 8:00 am-12:00 pm, afternoon session 1:00 pm-5:00 pm)

Enhancing Youth’s Motivation for Service Engagement

This interactive training will help service providers better understand common reasons for youth’s apparent lack of interest and lack of desire to engage with traditional service delivery systems.  As part of the training, participants will have the opportunity to explore their own beliefs, and potential biases, which may interfere with their ability to connect with youths and engage them in meaningful and supportive professional relationships.  Lastly, training participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice specific skills that have been shown to be effective in enhancing youth’s motivation for actively engaging in the valuable services offered by the various systems working to improve the quality of life of the young people in our community.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a method of communication for enhancing motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.  This workshop is intended to familiarize the MI beginner with techniques to use in working with clients; video scenarios will be used for group practice.
