KGV Engraved Die Proof for $1.80 from 2007sibir on ebay??

Post by tascollector »

I just noticed an eBay item listed by "2007Sibir".

My ACSC lists this Die proof at $30,000. The current price is $1.80.

I have asked 2007Sibir for any evidence of authenticity he may have, and await the reply with interest.

As I recall, this eBay seller has been alledged to offer chemically treated Vic stamps (post mark removed and presented as mint) as genuine, and expensive, so I have some reservations.

The item is at

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110478826382

Any comments ?

Didn't they release something like that as part of a set of reprints in the late 80's or 90's? I recall some die proof impressions on cardstock about the size of a postcard. A treasures from the Archives reprint?

His blurb says that its UNC. Does he mean Uncirculated - of course it would be - its a die proof! Or does he mean uncut - exept if its a real die proof wouldn't it be on a bigger heavier weighted paper? And not just the size of the stamp.

Sorry - beaten to it! At least I was right this time!

Sadly this 2007sibir guy looks like a died in the wool crook who simply will NOT reform.

We ran this below on 2007sibir a year or so back and the late Simon Dunkerely wrote pages on him in Stamp News - as you can see.

'2007sibir' then runs the IDENTICAL stamp to ebay Auction himself a week or so later (still 2 days to go on that) - after bleaching the living daylights out of it, and trying to scrub away the fiscal pen cancel - quite un-successfully as you can see. (This is HIS scan above of the resultant terrible mess - unaltered by me!)

New starting price $A1250 - claimed to be "unhinged - and claimed to have a Cat value as mint of $8,150. .

It magically appears to have been regummed in the same 10 days period since 2007sibir bought it.

(As a reference point, these massive stamps sell for around $250 each in the real market when in top condition, with no pinholes - I have the set of 5 right now on offer - £5-£9, which includes this £6 Blue - https://www.glenstephens.com/rarity" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

Can members please send 2007sibir this thread link

And suggest 2007sibir re-words the 1d Engraved description be "1990s PO reprint"

And suggest to him this deceptive lot now states the Coolgardie Camels are 100 year later crude facsimiles - - his write up imputes they are genuine.

I just had a look and he also has a 500 year old coin that somehow is also UNC! Uncirculated for 500 years? Looks nice - I might go for it! A bit of Henry VIII!

The Ebay listing calls the item an "OZ PRE-DECIMAL KGV ENGRAVED DIE PROOF STAMP SUPERB UNC ". I understand there was a black die print included in the 1999 Australia Post deluxe collection of Australian engraved stamps but it is not clear what he is selling.

If you checked, as I did, the ACSC for the KGV die proof 1913 you would see an illustration that looks just like the ebay image. If one were to be charitable you could call it a mistaken description, but if you were to be less forgiving it could be called a deliberate mis-description

As I posted it is CERTAIN this is the same proof found in the superb PO Book I and others sell. I sell each proof for $15.

It is NOT a 1913 Proof but a 1999 reprint.

"The Engraved Stamps Of The Commonwealth Of Australia"

The quite magnificent official Australia Post produced coffee table book. Compiled by Richard Breckon. Brass cornered, beautifully gold deeply embossed leatherette cover, gilt edged outer leaf edges, with matching marbled heavy slipcase. Issued in a VERY limited Edition for 'Australia 99'. I am advised only a few 100 copies were ever made, and were a near instant sell-out .... even at the very high issue price. Being recent they also NEVER come on the market - no-one wants to let them go!

Semi opaque interleaved pages with designs on them. Real heavyweight grade archival weight paper. Varnished glazed paper for effect in parts. The photos really do not begin to convey the lavishness and class of this book. My guess is the book and slipcase cost well over $100 to make. Shows masses of issued designs and superlative background info. Similar in size to a Leather PO Year Book.

Also contains 28 different Official correct size recess printed DIE PROOFS in black from the original dies - from 1913 1d Engraved KGV to 1965 Anzac. Inc most early commems - like Bridge, Jubilee, Canberra, Hermes, Sturt, Sesqui etc. Also high value Defins like £1 Robes and Arms, 7/6d Cook &c. All this at $15 an official die proof! NOT obtainable any other way than via this book.

A magnificent book for ANY collector to own. Words cannot describe the lavish production and contents and luxury "feel" .... EVERY person - dealer or collector - who has seen it here in the office desk picked it up and said "WOW"! Gary Watson's Prestige Philately got $437 for a set in their September 2007 Auction. They call them "without doubt the BEST product released by Australia post in recent decades". Buy yourself a classy GIFT you'll always love handling and looking at - or hint for this as a superb Christmas present!! $A425

2007Sibir has replied as follows:

" HI, THIS ENGRAVED DIE PROOF IS PART OF A(sic) AUSTRALIAN LIMITED ISSUE THAT CONTAINED A NUMBER OF THESE DIFFERENT ENGRAVED DIE PROOFS.

EACH STAMP IS IN BLACK AND WHITE AND SEPARATELY CUT OUT IN A PLASTIC COVER WITHOUT A HINGE."

I have suggested to him his description as it stands on eBay is misleading (See below), and he really should state his example is not the original 1913 Die Proof, but a reproduction issued in 1999, otherwise he may well be accused of misleading buyers.
As it stands, his description reads "OZ PRE-DECIMAL KGV ENGRAVED DIE PROOF STAMP

SUPERB UNC ORIGINAL

NICE INVESTMENT. "

The word " Original" doesnt exacly tell the story.

A year on and the crook 2007sibir is still at it.

Stated catalogue value $6,145.00 GREAT INVESTMENT.

While this shouldn't fool anyone being such a crude looking facsimile it has 7 bids so far $46.51 but has 7 days still to run.

Post by Global Admin »

LUCKILY ebay have clear written rules re offering fakes as genuine.

hopefully a dozen members report this item, getting it removed, and getting yet another black mark against this serial crook 2007sibir

------------------------

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-stamps.html

Selling of Stamps

eBay does not permit the sale of stamps that are fraudulent or improperly described. Sellers who knowingly fail to disclose information about the authenticity of a stamp, alterations to the stamp, or other information that might have a material impact on the stamp's value may be reported to the American Philatelic Society.

If the stamp is a forgery, fake, reproduction or facsimile:

it must be clearly and indelibly marked as such

a clear image of this mark must be included

it must be clearly stated in the title and/or description

If unsure of the origin or authenticity of the stamp, please state this clearly in the listing. Do not sell an item "As Is" regarding its authenticity.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

Listing cancellation

Limits on account privileges

Account suspension

Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

Loss of PowerSeller status

---------------------

As well as this similar but different worded rule

---------------------

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/currstamps.html

Counterfeit Currency and Stamps

All forged stamps, facsimiles, and reproductions may be listed but need to be clearly and indelibly marked as such on either the front or back of the stamp. See "Additional Information" for more details.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

Listing cancellation

Limits on account privileges

Account suspension

Forfeit of ebay fees on cancelled listings

Loss of PowerSeller status

--------------------

Any seller on ebay listing stamps or overprints or perfins that are forged must indelibly mark them thus on front and/or back.

Offering them without such markings can see the sellers removed in hours, if reported citing the above two VERY clear ebay policies.

Mention these two rules when you report them, and the ebay staffer can cancel accounts on the spot, citing these great new rules.

* * * *

As noted by others - ebay now have set up a fast new portal to report suspected sellers of forged stamps at - http://www.tinyurl.com/ebayfakes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - there is space for 10,000 characters in your reply, so all the relevant info can be added. Unlike most ebay complaint forms that frustratingly allow 100 characters etc.

After making my report to ebay and directing them to this discussion, I got this interesting reply:
Dear eBay Member,
Thank you for writing eBay in regard to suspicious stamp listings. Because eBay does not employ or train its Trust & Safety Customer Support Representatives to be experts in the area of stamps, we rely on expert opinions from knowledgeable people as well as reliable third party organizations.
Your report will be reviewed by a group of members that comprise a community watch group for stamp auctions. They then confer amongst themselves and either agree or disagree that the listings are problematic. If it is agreed that a listing(s) is fraudulent or improperly described, the listing(s) is then forwarded to eBay Trust andSafety for removal.
Please be sure to check our Prohibited, Questionable & Infringing Items pages for information on eBay listing policies and guidelines: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-ov.html If you received an informational alert or warning, and you have additional questions, or you have another listing to report, please contact us at the following link: http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-RS.html In order for us to get to you in a timely manner, please do not respond to this email. If you reply to this message we will not receive your email. All communications should be sent to the link provided above. Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping eBay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.
Sincerely,

I have the same message from eBay but it seems to me by the time this 'committee' review the listing it will be too late. For this to be some sort of protection for eBay users it needs to work quickly. I also some of raised Sibir's other dodgey items in my complaint to them. I wonder of we will ever know the result?

No you're right, Glen. I was referring to the email from ebay but the listing is still there. I guess it's back to waiting for the feedback to come up.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

Doh! :?

1000 appologies....

The earlier notice was the normal drivel regarding the 2007sibir listing.

The actual notice was for removal of a crash cover that was from some idiot that claimed just because an expert claimed it was a crash cover (even though it had no identifiers) then it was worth a couple of hundred dollars.

Unfortunately it was a common cover with no markings that he had seemingly got too close to the joint he was smoking...
