Friends of St John's Community Survey
Hi All,

Friends of St John's would love to hear your views on how our historic church building can best meet the needs of the people of Bromsgrove and visitors to our town. The ancient and historic building is here for all the town's people and is available for use by the general community for projects and events, as well as being used for worship.

As part of our ongoing development we are launching our Heritage Future Appeal. Our Grade I listed building has been standing at the heart of Bromsgrove for hundreds of years, so it needs ongoing maintenance and restoration to preserve the heritage. Additionally, we are looking to the future - how can this wonderful building best serve the people and community? This is where you come in - if you currently use the building a lot, a little, or not at all we want to hear your views.

For almost 1000 years the church has been a space for gathering and friendship; it has been a market place and a space for shelter; it is an auditorium for music and the arts; it is a sanctuary in times of sadness; uplifting in times of joy and celebration; it is used as a venue for the spoken word, exhibitions and performance; a space where school groups, civic organisations and traditional groups gather. The church is all these things and more, but how can we best make the building work for all the different purposes?

Please do take a few moments to share your thoughts with us.

Many thanks

The Friends of St John's Team

Church Hall
Many groups regularly use the church hall at St John's. Rather than list them all, if you use the church hall please let us know which groups you are part of. If you don't use the church hall just leave this question blank.
What would you need in the church for you to be happy with your group's meeting / activity moving from the church hall to the main church building?
One idea is to create a flexible space inside the main building to accommodate all activities. Other church buildings have created pods, cafes, open spaces, meeting rooms etc to accommodate their needs. Thinking about your group and your needs - what would you like to see in St John's?
Pews!
St John's has developed as a building - both inside and outside - over the centuries to accommodate the needs of the citizens of the time. In early days a dirt floor with straw covering would have enabled markets to take place inside the building, moving through time people would stand for services, Georgians had boxed and gallery pews giving two tiers of seating in St John's and in the mid 1800s Victorians installed the pews we have now.

Our vision at St John's is to create a multi-functional space, where the building can be used for a wide variety of uses, without the restriction of uncomfortable fixed seating. The picture below shows a Gala Dinner hosted by Lichfield Cathedral.  Locally Stoke Prior church regularly hold business networking breakfasts and dinner dances in their open space.

We understand that people have different views about pews, and we'd be delighted to hear your thoughts.
Can you help the Heritage Future Appeal?
Our Heritage Future Appeal aims to raise funds required to carry out urgent repairs to crumbling stonework and the clerestory high level windows, plus the urgent need to "Save our Spire" - the top section requires a complete rebuild to make it safe for the future. With our internal vision to create a flexible space with adequate heating, lighting, kitchen and toilets we are looking at an ambitious target of £1,000,000

With such funding we can create a building where the heritage is preserved and the future is secured. But we can't do it alone. Please let us know how you can help:
