And sorting out roughly this huge mess takes place tonight in the hotel room!

These photos only show part of it .. there are several suitcases more as well, down in the 4WD, as just no room in the Hotel unit for them.

Cost me a ton of money to buy it outright, but over time it will pay off well I am sure. Albums and albums of Kangaroos stamps (many bought as mint new issues in 1913 by earlier Generations of the family!) and very strong in Queensland stamps and States stamp before that. And a lot of USED material of this era too, as the family clearly had good access to high franking business mail.

I rented the largest thing Hertz had on hand - a big Nissan X Trail 4WD, and no WAY did it all fit in.

We are madly photoing and selling from here large cartons of the bulkier stuff, at cheap prices to save us flying back with it. As the most we can legally check back on Virgin is about 8 cartons between us I think. So watch the 'For Sale' column here for large bulky lots in next day or so, as it will be at giveaway prices.

Glen it's nice to see that you like to turn Hotel Rooms into another version of your house. There's no place like home.

What a great night, I start to like Townsville pretty much, made new friends, had a nice juicy steak .....and since Glen did not want to see my "stuff for sale" ....actually he was too busy with all his other commitments!

I am triumphing all the way.. stamp collecting still alive ...although Gaby had a good laugh with Julie ( Daryl's wife) what she would do with all the money....Glen would hand out to her!

At least she now has Glen's phone number.....if and when I hand my toolbox in!

Hi... Hi... Glen, I am glad, you did not found time to fit me in!

The sad part is, I have to bring all the books back into my stamp room!

Great pics Peter.

Your stamp room is far too tidy ... If Glen had dropped in, he could have reorganised it for you

We really needed an extra day up North to sort this better - rang Virgin to try to change flights to Tuesday, but nothing available as they have only 1 direct flight a day, so both of use were up to 4 am this morning packing up the 8 huge cartons. Virgin tells us that is absolute MAX we can check-in, even as Platinum flyers.

And leaving a MASS of other less valuable stuff behind in hotel room etc.

Sorry that we didn't get up to see yours Peter, and had a very quick drop in of donated stuff for local club, and fast rush off at Darryl and Julie's, en-route to the airport.

Townsville is such a lovely spot - thanks again to everyone for the catch up and hospitality.

What a great photo Peter ... in fact you captured everyone above very well.

And special thanks to Daryl (borisdog) and Julie for kindly baby sitting the FOUR heavy 20 kilo cartons of banknotes and coins that Stagman bought, and is getting his army mate to collect on his behalf - photos here -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=53588

I had NO idea when quickly listing it up, there as no much of it, and so much weight. Eighty kilos of this stuff for around 10 bucks a kilo is the world' best numismatic deal I'd suspect.

I just took a very rough guess at a price when I listed it up, taking photos in owner's house, and had not looked to closely at it all. When packing it up I reckon bullion scrap melt value of silver exceeded that, and saw just one KGV Banknote retail at what the entire 80 kilos cost!

We dropped the coins hoard off this morning, after visiting the Belgium Gardens PO to mail FIVE massive cartons of stuff to other stampboarders who bought the stuff we listed up here in the last few days.

I do not think the staff there had ever before seen 5 or 6 huge and heavy removal cartons covered on all sides in stamps, arrive for mailing. 8)

Our rented Nissan X Trail 4WD was packed to the ROOF with boxes when we left Motel. As Margo says we were up till 4am getting it all packed, and she wanted to be a at PO at 9am sharp.

Another 100 kilos to new homes. The Post cost from Townsville is HORRIFIC. One large box cheapest road mail to Sydney cost $72.

Anyway all cartons were plastered with full sheets of stamps on 4 sides at times, and the PostMistress at Belgium Gardens was bemused by it all, and even allowed me to cancel 2 or 3 of them "in case I mess it all up"!

We also airline checked back Eight huge removal cartons to Sydney on Virgin of stuff yet to be processed. 200-250 kilos or so plus huge carry on.

Masses of Kangaroo stamps and KGV heads, many albums full of them, that the previous generations of this family were extremely keen on, and many were bought at the PO at the time, right back to 1913.

And also dropped off on our visit to borisdog's place was a huge removalist carton of old catalogues, and stamp literature etc from the Estate.

Cost of shipping any of that to anywhere with your high parcel rates is just not viable, so simpler to donate it to the locals and/or the nearest stamp club.

Anyway there were a few monographs that seemed to fit his collecting interest, and if Mel or Peter have the urge to grab a few things for reference by all means contact Darryl.

Otherwise he can dumpster all the stuff he or the club does not need. 8)

Great home they have there, with a wonderful big deck, and a pool set in a rainforest setting.

Three months on, I am still only touching the sides of the amazing stuff bought back in the 8 massive removalist cartons we checked back on Virgin. 200-250 kilos of it, in old albums assembled enthusiastically over 3 generations. :)

As a one-man business, it really takes a ton of time (several years) to process this bit by bit, on top of the million other things occurring each day here. 8)

And we left a very heavy carton of stamp books and monographs at borisdog's place, for the local stampboarders there, to help themselves too etc.

That's on top of the EIGHTY KILOS of coin material that stagman trustingly bought sight unseen, and had collected up there from borisdog, the very best buy of his life I think he'll agree. One single KGV Banknote was worth what he paid I noticed, when boxing it up - 8)

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=53588

And the van full of heavy cartons we mailed direct from there, the boxes covered in full sheets stamps, offered dirt cheap by the large carton below - totally unchecked by me basically, as Virgin only allowed 8 cartons of checked baggage between us, even as Platinum members! So all the rest needed to be mailed direct from there - or left behind.

As it was, we left about 50-100 kilos of old binders, album covers, packaging, junky stuff, and near worthless material behind in the Motel room, with a $50 tip for the hapless cleaner!

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53619

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53613

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53618

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53610

etc, etc.

A fun weekend, and Margo and I have never worked so hard trying to roughly sort and photo and load up this stuff in the oppressive heat, in our cheap motel room. Up until 4am and a flight leaving at 9am.

The grandfather had bought a lot of material direct from the PO when issued, and some of that luckily started from the early Kangaroo and KGV issues. One fragile old glassine envelope had the Second Watermark Kangaroo 2d to 2/- .... all fresh MUH original gum.

I loaded up this SG 29, 2/- today, and it sold within hours ... this kind of thing is very seldom seen with 100 years of provenance, and never before having been on the market.

We worked all night to 4am literally, desperately trying to get the better stuff into these 8 or so huge removalist cartons, as Virgin had confirmed would NOT let us check through any more than that.

The REST of the van were sold off cheap here, and EIGHTY Kilos of coin and banknote stuff Stagman bought and collected from Borisdog's home via an Army mate, see links above, and much of it we mailed from the Belgium Gardens PO the next morning in a mountain of huge cartons to buyers here, on way to airport, and we left a lot with the "locals" to hand out at local stamp club free etc.

There was still a MOUNTAIN of empty binders and glassines and Hagners and folders and low value junk and catalogues we left in cartons inside and outside Motel room, and I left a $50 tip for the poor unsuspecting room maid!

Yes the 200-250 KILOS of better material in 8 huge removalist boxes and excessive carry-on we shipped back free with Virgin (the benefits of being Platinum members!)

I listed up some goodies from it today - http://www.glenstephens.com/rarity.html - the purchase that keeps on giving! Several generations of collectors formed it, right back from the 1913 Roos issues, that they bought at face value.

They had a half sheet of the 1913 3d Roo etc, in superb MUH, lying flat between 2 pieces of paper in a folder - that kind of stuff.

I grab a book now and again off a shelf, and list a few things up. The best thing is, this material had NEVER been on the market for a century or so. Was like buying Aladdin's Cave. :D

Wow, what a Hoard !

Nowadays, you don't find such collections which have been formed over many generations, at least not here in India.

Would love to see any stamps from India, Indian states from this hoard, if you do find some time to post any interesting items.

He had envelopes of many 100s of old India KEVII stamps I listed up here this week, and was quickly sold to a dealer. Never been looked at for over a Century for postmarks, watermarks, varieties etc.

Still wading through this hoard, whenever I get 5 minutes to grab a few more handfuls. 8-)

We fly to Townsville in a few weeks, and then drive inland, so if any members up there wants me shlep up cartons of stockbooks, or Hangers etc, right up there via checked baggage, to save the $75 post office mail cost - please contact me!

Have cancelled it 3 times already due to the Queensland loopy COVID rules (we are treble jabbed) so fingers crossed that sanity seems to be prevailing at last.

Queenslands loopy Covid rules kept the disease out of rural areas in Queensland and kept rural areas going along very well.

Townsville had 39 cases in almost 2 years prior to the borders opening.

Townsville now has well over 300 cases in 2 weeks since the borders opened and numerous venues have shutdown temporarily due to lack of staff because of quarantining/testing requirements.

The loopy rules kept the resources industry going and kept very, very valuable export dollars coming in. Which generated revenue for Tax coffers in order to pay people who couldn't work. That might not go so well now given the propensity most mining companies have to virtue signal on safety matters. But at least WA will still tick over.

I'm glad that your version of sanity has prevailed.

But hey, come on up.

Well, Borisdog, Covid has had no material impact on the resources industry anywhere in Australia.

You didnt have to lock borders to achieve that.

The issue in Queensland is the misery reeked on the tourism industry.

It is time Australia united on a national approach to covid & health not this 1890s States rights stuff

Sure.

The misery "wreaked" on the Tourist industry prior to the borders opening might just be multiplied a whole lot more before it gets better. And on many, many other industries. Industries that in many rural areas had until now escaped pretty much unscathed.

Likewise the resources industry.

You can always tell a Victorian.........................

The country has painted itself into a corner. The only way is forward now is to just let loose and hang the consequences.

Arrived a few days back to about a FOOT of rain in 24 hours - the side effects of some Typhoon it seems.

LOTS of road flooding and road closures all around, so we holed up in Charters Towers for the last few days, and cancelled Plan A. A very nice little town actually. CT is a bit elevated and away from coast, but still massive rain here.

Somehow talked Virgin into flying us back a few days early, tomorrow lunchtime. Qantas cancelled fights on the day we arrived, and flights are time chopping and changing all the time.

So I assume second last column is mm? A foot of rain is 300mm as I recall.

I think the last 3 days has been most of those figures. Timed exactly to our arrival.

These are daily totals in millimetres. 100m equals 3.96 inches. Readings are done at 9:00am each day.
So the very last column are the readings done this morning.

It IS the Wet Season up here at the moment.

There's a reason why it's called the Wet Season.

And that's a very lost "typhoon". Typhoons live in the northern hemisphere.

There was a weak cyclone ( Tiffany ) a couple of weeks ago that crossed both sides of Cape York and then the Eastern NT coast but I'd be surprised if this current event is related, seems a bit distant past ( 17 days ago in fact ). It's just the standard monsoon rain.
