NZ Post will again use stamps on some mail.

Post by stampmogul »

NZ Post has just announced that it will re-commence using actual stamps when posting some mail.

They hadn't clarified which "selected mail" would be sent using stamps.

They attribute this change to "promoting philately".

Maybe they can be further persuaded to use stamps on all their mailings "in order to properly promote philately".

I presume (?) this post above refers to the NZ Philatelic Bureau mail?

Very impressive - they haven't used stamps on philatelic mail for ages!

Good news for the hobby :)

Glen,

Yes, the announcement may have been the work of Simon Allison.

It doesn't sound like they will change to stamps when posting philatelic orders, however collectors should clamor for this to be done (as we are paying for the postage on every order & don't want Permit 182201 imprint instead).

What "announcement", when, what did it ACTUALLY say, and who on earth is Simon Allison?

Stampboards is not a game of Charades or an online Crypric Crossword.

Assume all 11,000 members know little or nothing of your favourite topic, and write headings accordingly please (you can edit for an hour - please do so.)

So far this thread s a total train wreck, offering zero facts of any kind.

The "Collector News" article from Focus Magazine of October,2014 stated :-

"We're pleased to announce that you will soon see stamps on selected mail you receive from us.

"In the past, the process of affixing stamps to our outgoing mailings has not been cost effective.

"However, we have been working through this issue and in the coming months you will begin to see stamps on some of our outward mailings.

"We think this is a great step forward for promoting philately and hope you will agree"

Focus is a production of Simon Allison,

"Head of Solutions"

Good to see NZ Post doing something positive here! Even if it is a bit ambiguous!

I have a standing order with Australia Post and have never seen anything but "the white label" in three years!

I would like to see some actual stamps on my letters...and properly cancelled would be another bonus  . So many things come through with either no cancel at all or a really good set of city rail tracks!

At least I have trained my local Postmaster to NOT do the texta thing on uncancelled mail! He did it twice  got told... and has not done it since....I would prefer him to cancel it on arrival than the TEXTA thing!

Maybe, "we're outsourcing the distribution of our promotional material to Bangladesh, so you'll receive mail after its been at sea for a month, affixed with worthless definitives from that country, licked on by people earning $2 a day". Or maybe they really will ship orders from the Philatelic Bureau in NZ franked with real stamps, but will raise the processing fee to an arm and a leg to cover the cost.

Aethelwulf, we've all made typo's over our time here, and admit it, the big corporations have done it too! I'll just be happy to see actual postage stamps on mail from the philatelic department....that's what it's all about after all, isn't it?!

If they send out two or three with Stamps on they will have fullfilled their promise of, some.

Beware of the word some, its does not mean a quarter or half it does not mean many, it can mean a mere handfull.

Simon Allison is the new manager of the Stamps and Coins section of NZ Post Ltd, he has taken Ivor McMasters job after he retired earlier this year, Simon was formerly Ivor's deputy.

NZ Post also does not charge postage for domestic (New Zealand customers). So hence we have never complained about stamps not being used here, but if they do, that would be great especially if they are REAL stamps, not CALS or Kiwistamps (Undenominated labels).

The first use of stamps again on NZ Post outward mail.

This envelope was received today & is a welcome use stamp after at least 20 years. Even if it is a peel & stick $1.90 stamp, this is a sensible decision as the mail goes out to collectors who are encouraged to purchase items.

I received the same stamp,(the $1.90 Hobbit), with advertising about the "Desolation of Smaug" stamps, the next Hobbit movie. :D

No cancel in NZ, but the Aust end added a SWLF 21Oct13
ML 540, just underneath the stamp.

While the NZ use of stamps is to be applauded, perhaps it may be possible for them to design their own postmark, incorporating a kiwi or silver fern.

Australia Post please take note that NZ has shown the initiative, and there is more money to be made in stamps if properly advertised and listening to the consumer base.

Even the Faroes use stamps when you order from them.

A great idea and as a Crusader for all in philately to use STAMPS on all mail, I'll give this a plug in 'Stamp News'.

Can someone who got one please email me a scan? Ideally one with the Australian ugly pink sorting codes on it, clearly showing it has gone thru post.

CLEAN the scanner platen carefully, place cover face down on cleaned glass, place reverse of a black Hagner sheet on top of it, and scan at 600 dpi or so.

Thanks. :)

Yes but they can't be used for overseas mail.

Anyway I have done an order from them this week, and it will be interesting to see if they put stamps (CALS or otherwise) on my local post order.

Princestamps,
I have received more than a dozen envelopes from New Zealand with only CALs paying the postage.

They are produced by the Business Section of NZ Post & are valid for any postage at the face value.
Usually they contain multiple stamps to make up the overseas rate, however there apart from the base rate stamps there have been lots issued at $1.00,$1.20, $1.50, $1.80, $2.00 & $2.40 values.

It is just that the entire print run of each CAL issued goes to the person submitting the design & paying for the lot.

Having said that there are many, many CALs for "Real Aotearoa" (wholly owned by NZ Post).
Here is a sample.

I'm quite happy to hear that NZ Post is going to use real stamps again. I received my brochure for the new Hobbit stamps franked with a $2.40 Hobbit stamp. Now only if they could manage to apply a post mark. :) It's pretty bad when an agency of NZ Post doesn't have it's own mail properly cancelled.

Frankly (is that a pun?), I would be happy to get a letter with a CAL on it as well. I'd keep something like that for potential postal history someday.

I was scanning an old Cook Islands Philatelic Bulletin, and was a bit confused about the outcome / intent:
Stamps are supplied at face value plus return postage. If postage is not included stamps from the order will be used for postage.
For the postage costs:
* use the highest denomination stamps available
* use OHMS stamps to cover postage
* take stamps from order in complete sets
So...you could order a complete set of mint stamps, and then find yourself being delivered a partial set, because they were used for postage?

Image

But great that there was a variety of options....probably helps explains the availability of fine used Cook Island stamps in collections today.

Well obviously not on local orders. My order arrived today with the usual permit paid envelope. Then again NZ Post does not charge Postage and handling on NZ based orders, so beggars can't be choosers. :?

I have always used CAL's on overseas mail and have never hit a snag using them that way. This includes bulk postings, philatelic mail postings via "Real Aotearoa" outlets etc.

I have never known NZ Post not to allow them to be used on overseas mail. The only aspect of them not being allowed is that they do not have the name of the issuing country on them and accordingly do not comply with UPU regulations.

However many stamps used by a variety of other countries also do not comply by having the country name on them. Those inscribed Aotearoa do not comply and all those countries which use alternative names of their country on their stamps also do not comply. this includes Norway which uses Norge or Noreg, Belgium recently issued stamps inscribed Belgium rather than Belgie.

There are no such countries as USA, RSA, SAR etc but these always pass through the international mail without any problems. There is no evidence at all that CAL's can't be used on overseas mail from New Zealand. My evidence is that always can be. Talking with NZ post staff also confirms that they will always accept them for overseas mail use.

This is not the first time NZ Post have experimented with using stamps on overseas mail in recent years. There was a short lived experiment in 2009 as shown by the cover below. The use of the Kiwistamp first day of issue strike seemed a little odd, but better that than the lack of any cancellation on the current mailings.

Unfortunately the policy was discontinued as it was deemed too expensive, and prepaid envelopes were reintroduced.

Rcvd a similar cover from NZ Post today. Good to see they have used the correct postage.

Just 1 thing.... Did all of you, those who received the 2012 Hobbit stamp have the NZ 2013 Hobbit Brochure in it (most likely).

Do you'll suspect a marketing gimmick to promote the latest Hobbit stamps. 8)

Kennethsequeira,

Same applies to the mailing here to the UK.

However, I had already received an order sheet and a letter about "The Hobbit" issue a few days previously.
So, having only ever had a single piece of mail from NZpost with a stamp on it over a number of years, I received two in the one week!!

Just a pity neither were franked.

Thanks for the clarification Aethelwulf.

I've obviously been misusing this term for years.

I guess that at some point in the past I muddled up "franked" and "cancelled" , and thought that they were the same thing. Now I know.

So.... I wish that NZpost postmarked their overseas correspondence as well as franking it with "Hobbit" stamps.

As far as mailings to the UK are concerned.....

Yes, apparently, for "standard" (7 3/4" x 4 1/4") envelopes carrying leaflets and order forms (two of which have arrived recently).

No, for the delivery of the stamps, covers etc. in A5 sized envelopes.

I have been putting aside for some time now as many CALs as I can get that have been genuinely used in the year of issue. My earliest usage is a pair of BMW.

The overseas usages [for single in-date issues] that are kept will be small in number ……

Sadly the Philatelic Bureau was just using a stamp on outgoing mail as a promotion for their recent Hobbit issue.

Gee, if NZ Post gets to be known for actually FRANKING their philatelic mailings to standing order customers, I might re-enlist!!

In the 1970's as a stamp-collecting teen, I had several standing order accounts and tended to keep them in force longer when they sent real stamps on their mailings to me (Liechtenstein, St. Vincent, New Zealand)

I dropped the ones who didn't fairly quickly as my limited stamp budget demanded belt-tightening. Forty years later I am keenly aware, as not ALL collectors want ONLY mint or CTO new issues.

Marketing directors, are you listening?

Not cancelled by NZ Post, but faint red dash sorting markings applied across the stamp by Australia Post in the sorting centre.
These marks visible to the eye, but not picked up by the scan.

Funny, the dodgy NZ Post sent their latest bulletins to NZ collectors with an UNCANCELLED 70c "Year of the snake" stamp! Most folks probably soaked it off for re-use.

Now how is this for funny use of supposedly demonetised stamps:

Image
NZ 30th December 2013 cancel on cover with "Health"semipostals of 1953 and 1960 affixed!

Still, at least the cover is cancelled, which is more than they can do with the junkmail from Whanganui!
