Teacher of the Month
Mrs. Michelle
Mrs. Michelle has been selected by the editors for February Teacher of the Month! We feel that Mrs. Michelle deserves this honor due to her numerous hours of hard work and dedication to our school. In addition to being an amazing teacher, she puts hard work in the Senior Beta. Thank you for all that you do!
Mardi Gras, French for "Fat Tuesday," is a centuries-old tradition celebrated primarily in regions with strong French Catholic heritage, most notably in New Orleans, Louisiana. This exuberant festival marks the culmination of Carnival season, a period of revelry and indulgence leading up to the solemnity of Lent in the Christian calendar.
Over the centuries, Mardi Gras in New Orleans evolved into a grand spectacle characterized by elaborate parades, colorful costumes, and lively street parties. The tradition of masked balls, krewe (social clubs) festivities, and throwing of beads and trinkets to spectators from parade floats became hallmarks of the celebration.
Cajun Mardi Gras, also known as Courir de Mardi Gras, offers a unique and vibrant twist to the traditional festivities associated with this annual celebration. Rooted in the rural communities of southwestern Louisiana, Cajun Mardi Gras preserves centuries-old traditions and showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Cajun people.
In contrast to the elaborate parades and grand balls of New Orleans, Cajun Mardi Gras is a more grassroots affair, characterized by its communal spirit and rustic charm. The festivities typically begin early in the morning on Fat Tuesday, as masked riders, known as "Mardi Gras," don traditional costumes and set out on horseback or in colorful wagons to visit neighboring farms and households.
Accompanied by lively Cajun music, the Mardi Gras go from house to house, singing traditional begging songs known as "chansons de Mardi Gras." In exchange for their performances, they are rewarded with ingredients for a communal gumbo pot, such as chicken, sausage, rice, and vegetables, ensuring a hearty feast for all participants later in the day.
One of the most iconic features of Cajun Mardi Gras is the chasing of the chicken, where revelers engage in a playful pursuit of a live chicken, symbolizing the quest for sustenance and merriment. The chase culminates in the preparation of the chicken for the communal gumbo, further emphasizing the shared experience and sense of camaraderie.
Black History Month
Black History Month
Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, has its roots in the early 20th century. It began with the efforts of Carter G. Woodson, a pioneering African American historian, and Jesse E. Moorland, a minister. In 1926, they established Black History Week to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both of which fell in February.
The aim of Black History Week was to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans, who had long been marginalized or excluded from mainstream historical narratives. Woodson and Moorland believed that by highlighting the accomplishments of African Americans, they could promote greater understanding and respect among different racial groups.
The week-long observance gained popularity and significance over the years, leading to the expansion of its duration. In 1976, as part of the United States Bicentennial celebrations, President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month, urging Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."
Since then, Black History Month has become an annual observance not only in the United States but also in other countries around the world. It serves as a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of African Americans, celebrate their culture and heritage, and reaffirm commitments to equality, justice, and inclusion. Throughout the month, various events, programs, and activities are organized to educate people about the significant contributions of African Americans to society and to promote dialogue and understanding across racial and cultural lines.
“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”
—Martin Luther King, Jr.

About the Song:
Song of the
month
This song was Houston’s biggest hit until “I Will Always Love You,” five years later.
The story behind the song belongs to its songwriters—George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam of the band Boy Meets Girl.
In The Billboard Book of Number One Hits, Rubicam recalled being inspired to write a song after she and Merrill watched Whitney perform at an outdoor venue.
