- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2022Whether you're new to mentoring or a seasoned vet, this is a great resource to sharpen your skills. Even as a mentee, there's a lot to take away to improve mentoring relationships.
Although it's an instructional manual, The Mentor's Guide is easy and enjoyable to read. The information is well-researched, clearly explained, and great examples are provided. There are also great resources (worksheets and tables) included as a reference. I tabbed numerous pages as I read it to come back to as needed.
I especially appreciated the chapters on Negotiating and Coming to Closure. Previously, I had only focused on the growing and learning portion of the mentoring relationship. But I've learned that the negotiating (or establishing a mentoring agreement) and the closing out/moving on in the relationship are essential and set up for a better relationship. I will definitely be highlighting these steps in future mentoring relationships I have.
Definitely recommend this book - very motivating!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2022This is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in mentoring others. The text is readable, the tools are practical and the book is organized in a way that is easy to use as a reference or as a continuous reading experience. It is a book that captures the latest and best practices that are the foundation of strong learning relationships. As a learning and development professional, I am going to refer to it often, and give it as a gift to those entering the field. I highly recommend it.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2022The Mentor's Guide is not just an insightful book, but also a helpful tool to reflect on my mentoring relationships in the past, present, and (hopefully) future. Zachary and Fain do an excellent job codifying the skills needed to mentor well, provide examples of those skills in practice, and lead the reader to apply them via written prompts. I appreciate how that mix demystified what mentoring is or could be, without narrowing it down to what could feel like a checklist. This is a book I anticipate revisiting often.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2022What a rich, comprehensive resource! While it might be a third edition, it's my first copy of The Mentor's Guide. There are so many great tools and I love the workbook element to it. I get asked to mentor others a lot and this will provide a useful structure to the relationship and conversations.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2022Mentoring experts Lois Zachary and Lisa Fain have hit a home run with this third edition. It’s rare that a new edition is so radically fresh, relevant, and necessary. I was immediately engaged with their many pertinent cases and exercises that reinforce learning and inspire self-refection. Warning—the self reflection can be somewhat painful. The book effectively forced me to come to terms with some shortcomings that I had successfully buried. These were not fun moments but necessary to my growth as a Mentor and Mentee. The authors delve into uncomfortable work topics where other fear to tread. They deal honestly with taboo subjects such a sexual orientation and other societal, cultural, and racial bias/prejudice. This books helps readers of all ages to recognize and mentor to generational differences with awareness of the pitfalls of over “generalizing” any group.
Dr. Zachary and Ms. Fain beautifully underscored the need for an egalitarian mentor-mentee relationship. They removes any illusion that the mentor and mentee relationship is intuitive or casual. The authors clearly and generously lay-out the definitive road map for creating a successful mentorship process in an organzitions of all types and sizes.
This book is a must for any organization wishing to build and empower talent. It is particularly essential as leaders and staff struggle to create/retain a solid corporate culture in the new world of virtual work. I am recommending this book to all of my corporate clients. The Mentor’s Guide will not sit on your bookshelf. It will be at your fingertips for frequent reference with many margin notes and lovingly dog-eared pages.
