Oh Myyy! - There Goes The Internet (Life, the Internet and Everything Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,516 ratings

How did a 75-year old actor from Star Trek become a social media juggernaut? Why does everything he posts spread like wildfire across the ether, with tens or even hundreds of thousands of likes and shares? And what can other sites, celebrities and companies do to attain his stratospheric engagement levels, which hover or top 100 percent while theirs languish in the single digits?

Read about George Takei’s meteoric rise and dominance of the Internet in Oh Myyy (There Goes the Internet), published of course in electronic format.
In this groundbreaking, hilarious and informative book, Takei recounts his experiences on platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, where fans and pundits alike have crowned him King. He muses about everything from the nature of viral sharing, to the taming of Internet trolls, to why Yoda, bacon and cats are such popular memes. Takei isn’t afraid to tell it likes he sees it, and to engage the reader just as he does his legions of fans.

Both provokingly thoughtful and wickedly funny, Oh Myyy! captures and comments upon the quirky nature of our plugged-in culture. With Takei’s conversational yet authoritative style, peppered with some of his favorite images from the web, readers should be prepared to LOL, even as they can’t help but hear his words in their heads in that unmistakable, deep bass.

George Takei is a civil rights activist, social media superstar, Grammy-nominated recording artist, New York Times bestselling author, and pioneering actor whose career has spanned six decades. He has appeared in more than 40 feature films and hundreds of television roles, most famously as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, and he has used his success as a platform to fight for social justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and marriage equality. His advocacy is personal: during World War II, Takei spent his childhood unjustly imprisoned in United States incarceration camps along with 125,000 other Japanese Americans.

He now serves as chair emeritus and a member of the Japanese American National Museum’s Board of Trustees. Takei served on the board of the Japan-United States Friendship Commission under President Bill Clinton, and, in 2004, was conferred with the Gold Rays with Rosette of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan for his contribution to US-Japan relations.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald has an often misused line about there being "no second acts in American lives" (written back when plays had three acts, and thus having a vastly different meaning in today's two-act world). Still, it makes sense to recycle and re-misuse the quote when it comes to one George Takei. Over the last couple of years, Mr. Takei, 75 years old and having outlived "Star Trek", the franchise's several movies, and the increasingly ludicrous spin-off series, has recently been declared winner of the Internet.

"Oh Myyy!" is a short little e-book, made up of short chapters, examining Takei's recent career activities, and explaining, in a somewhat bemused fashion, just how he's managed to become so popular on the Internet. This could have been a quick gallery of recycled posts, with no new content, and still would have sold just as well. Fortunately, it's more than just that.

Instead, the new material is laugh-out-loud funny in places, beginning with Takei's reaction to having become a cult icon of (and later a cast member on) the Howard Stern radio program. Mr. Sulu breaks down his successes on both Twitter and Facebook, and attempts to explain his sense of humor for posterity. There's an old rule that, if you have to explain the joke, it's no longer a joke... but, with the Internet evolving as quickly as it has (nobody who watches The Social Network will believe that THIS is how Zuckerberg and company intended their invention to be used a decade later), it's actually interesting to see Takei dissect just why he thinks his various posts and image re-posts touch the nerve that they have.

One example, which takes one of the more ridiculous corners of the Internet and turns it into something resembling poetry:

"Somewhere along the way to the digital age, somebody decided that cats conjugate improperly when speaking English, plot the end of the human race, and love to eat cheeseburgers. For some reason, these assumptions stuck, and a new break of cat memes and videos made their way onto the Interweb."

Writing an e-book, Takei is also able to cut out the long lag between writing and print, and thus "Oh Myyy!" is full of quite fresh references, such as, for example, to the Hostess bankruptcy/demise of the Twinkie, and Donald Trump's more recent meltdowns concerning the November 2012 U.S. Presidential election.

The most interesting chapters in the book meld together Takei's Internet humor with and his own political/activist believes. A chapter about Takei's mock audition for the Broadway Spider-Man musical, which contains an unfortunate photo of George wearing a too-tight harness around the pelvis, winds up with Takei's own full-throated defense of his own activism, and just what he hopes to achieve with his Internet presence. That's really what the book is about; not just a mere re-hashing of cat memes and digs at "Twilight".

However, those help. Digs at Kristen Stewart acting range, still never not funny.

George Takei, once known only for his role as Sulu on the original Star Trek series, tells us about his presence on the Internet. This primarily concerns his Facebook page, although he also discusses his use of Twitter and YouTube. There are three kinds of things to learn from the book.

First, it discusses what George Takei is up to lately. He writes about his life with his husband Brad and his involvement as a gay activist in the marriage equality issue. There is some Star Trek content, but a great deal more about the play he is helping to produce about the internment of Japanese-Americans during the Second World War. Particularly for someone in his seventies, George has an active and busy life.

The second type of information available in the book is more directly concerned with Facebook. George talks about his experiences, both before and after he earned an "in" with their engineers. We learn a few things about how Facebook algorithms decide what to include in our newsfeeds. George also has suggestions about timing posts, selecting the best format, and making one's language consistent and distinctive.

The primary focus of the book, though, is how all of this comes together in George's online presence. He discusses how he learns of new events, how reliable online information is and isn't, and the role his fans play in giving him feedback about his online behavior. He faces daily decisions about what to pass on, how to comment, and how much "Takei" to include with the humor. He sees himself as building and maintaining an online community. Certain communication techniques, content selection strategies, and rules for his own behavior have proven helpful in this effort. There have been some mistakes, too. George does not flinch away from describing them.

The book is worthwhile for its integrated treatment of these topics. I found its insights on community-building the most valuable. There is more here about maintaining an engaging Facebook page than any other source I have read. The technical tips are helpful, but more helpful is getting inside George Takei's head and seeing how he thinks about his fans, what he feels he owes them, and how he strives for the right boundaries between his online presence and the other aspects of his life.

I recommend Takei's book to anyone who posts content to Facebook on a regular basis--and wants to build lasting connections with the people who read it.

As at least 3.1 million people know, George Takei played the character of Lt. Sulu on the original Star Trek, and he now manages one of the most popular pages on FaceBook. "Oh, Myyy" explains how a busy 75 year old gay actor and activist mastered the world of Facebook and created a new icon for millions of people.

Takei is a witty and charming raconteur, and he offers a lot of engaging stories about what he has learned about FaceBook and its arcana, such as Edge Rank--he is both an advocate and a critic of the company, taking FB to task for certain things but giving its employees (many of whom are among his fans) the chance to tell the company's side of the story. Sprinkled throughout the book are examples of the hilarious memes that have made Takei's page so popular, as well as discussions of his efforts as an activist. He comes across as a thoughtful, conscientious and courteous fellow who hasn't let fame go to his head,

The book is also very up to date--one of the virtues of e-publishing is that the author can keep updating the text right up until the book is released--so the narrative covers events like the presidential election and Curiosity's landing on Mars. All in all, a quick, enlightening and enjoyable read. It's a must for fans of Takei's page, and well worth reading for its engaging insights about FaceBook and social media.

This book was a brilliant little read! I have been a follower of Mr. Takei on his Facebook page for a year or so now and I finally decided to buy his book, having enjoyed his various posts, and was not disappointed. While a little brief, this book is written in Mr. Takei's unique style and serves both as a semi-autobiographical tour through Mr. Takei's experiences with social media and as a general 'how-to' guide for those wishing to take a shot at establishing themselves on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. All of this is accompanied by Mr. Takei's tongue-in-cheek humour, as well as a collection of funny images and memes that he enjoys. Overall, a fantastic purchase for anyone who is a fan of George Takei or even those who aren't too familiar with his work and are just looking for a lighthearted read.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's okay to be Takei!
Reviewed in Germany on March 3, 2015
Oh myyy, I really do like him!
(Kapitel "Getting my Facefix" und "I'm on the edge" behandeln das Facebook Thema im Speziellen)

It's on the net, it must be true"). G. Takei weiß um seine Berühmtheit, aber besonders weiß er, das er ein Mensch ist.
Ich verbrachte sehr gern Zeit mit Dir, my naughty gay Asian uncle!
