Thank you so much for your interest in judging for the Talking Pirates Speech and Debate tournament being hosted by Platte County High School October 18th and 19th.
Please complete this form and select all time slots below that you would be available to judge. If possible, please provide two contact numbers.
If you have never judged before, no worries! On or about October 13th, more information will be sent to you about the various events and judging. For now, here's a quick explanation.
Individual Events are students performing speech and theatre events. You will watch approximately six-eight students (no more than 10 minutes each), give WRITTEN constructive feedback as a listener/viewer on their presentation skills, and rank the students 1st through 6th (or whatever number is in the "room"). No oral feedback allowed.
Student Congress: A group of 10-25 students will compete in a legislative session. Students in turn will give speeches both advocating for and encouraging the defeat of the measure in front of them. Following each speech, competitors will be able to pose questions of the speaker. Once debate is exhausted on a particular item, the chamber will vote either to pass or fail the legislation, and debate moves on to the next item. Judges only judge the speeches and defense of the student's stance during questioning, not the voting or legislative process.
Debate Events consist of Lincoln Douglas (one vs. one), Big Question (one vs. one), and Public Forum (two vs. two). You will watch the debate and determine who wins. A simple guideline is to ask yourself "If I had to vote right now on this issue with only the information presented by the debaters, which side would I vote?" You should only take into consideration the evidence presented by the teams, resisting any personal biases on the topic.
Thank you again for helping make this year's tournament a reality! We couldn't do it without you! We will have a hospitality room available for you!
