About the author

Helen Wallace-Iles was born in 1966, into a world far less tolerant of differences than the one we live in today. Her first son was born in 1991, followed by two more sons and a daughter; all four are on the autism spectrum.
Helen is a qualified psychotherapist and hypnotherapist who ran a successful private practice for many years before founding her own charity (Autism All Stars Foundation UK) in 2011.
Ignoring the predictions of doom and gloom that surrounded her children when they were young, Helen followed her own path as a parent - choosing to accept them as they were and encourage them to live their best possible lives. As a result they've grown into happy, productive and independent people who all make a positive contribution to society.
'The Ringmaster's Tale' series follows their adventures and mishaps as well as offering a great deal of useful information about autism itself, and some superb therapeutic advice from someone who truly understands the day to day struggles autistic people and their families can face.
The first book in the series 'Autism, Asperger's Anarchy!' has been very well received and continues to offer sensible, practical advice to its readers. Written in an informal, conversational style, it opens a window into the world of autism that's accessible to everyone.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 August 2024Reading this book encouraged me to recognise even more autistic characteristics that my children have.
Easy read while being instructive.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 November 2023This is an excellent primer about autism. Having known a few autistic people during the course of my life, I thought I knew a thing or two, but clearly not as much as I thought I did. This book dispels many of the myths of what autism isn’t and gives invaluable, yet moving and humorous guidance on how to (and how not to) interact with autistic people. In places it is not for the faint hearted, but then I suppose autism parenting isn’t for the faint hearted either! Essential reading on the subject!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 January 2020Lovely personal annecdotes & insights into the realities & joys of living with children with autism. It dispells a number of myths, offers a lot of hope & if anything is a remarkable true journey of a parent who loves her children, who grows with them & rejoices in their achievements.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 August 2019I purchased this book whilst my 5 year old was awaiting his Autism diagnosis, once I started reading I found it difficult to put down. It is a mothers account of her own journey bringing up 4 children on the spectrum, it is packed with easy to read honest and vital information, but rather than feeling like I was reading a text book, it was like reading a personal letter from my best friend.
It is factual, honest, entertaining and real, from someone who has experienced ASD first hand as a mother, I found every part of the book relevant and invaluable to my life.
I recommend this book to anyone who has any connection to autism whatsoever, be it friends, relatives, teachers or health professionals, not just parents. I myself am making sure my extended family read it, particularly drawing their attention to the myth buster section!
Thank-you, Helen for sharing your amazing story and advice, I eagerly await your next book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2022This is the most informative book I have read regarding autism, so much explanation into autism and how the autistic brain sees the world around it. It is so great to read a book written by a Mother who has had so much experience of raising 4 autistic children and I now have so much hope for the future by using the techniques included and the reassurance that with the right support and environment children can grow and thrive and lead very happy and fulfilling lives. An amazing book and I cannot thank the author enough for going to such extraordinary lengths to write this book purely for the benefit of others.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 December 2017This is a brilliant book written in a sympathetic, understanding but lighthearted way. This brilliant author has five children with autism of various degrees so knows what she is talking about. It is helpful and full of ideas and had me thinking "now why didn't I think of that". I shall follow her progress with great interest, and the progress of her children. I am the grandmother of Grace an autistic girl of 11 going on 5, and a grandson aged 8 who is brainy beyond compare whose teachers have said they believe he has Aspergers. Grace has learning difficulties but is a ray of sunshine. I cared for them both when their mum returned to work. When I explained to people that Grace has autism the reply was the same "that must be difficult". But no way. Her brother, yes, but her no. I feel truly blessed having them in my life. So thank you for this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 August 2022Such an amazing book, I could relate in so many ways and also had answers to somethings I didn't know. A must read for anyone who has a child with Autism or waiting for a diagnosis, this will really help you feel not alone. A very informative book to help people understand Autism. Can't wait for the next book. Well done Helen you have and are doing an amazing job. Thank you Carol.
