Epic Vashon Beach Clean-up
Join the Vashon Rotary Club and island partners for a global day of action! As part of Rotary's Epic Day of Service, we will join thousands of others around the world to make a difference in our communities. On Vashon-Maury Island, we are tackling beach pollution and we need your help! In addition to cleaning up all the plastic and other trash on Vashon beaches, we will be focusing on rogue beach tires. We are also working with Artist Addie Boswell who will be transforming lots of the beach trash into works of art (see below). We are in the process of working with island residents and organizations to identify which segments of the 52 miles of Vashon shorelines need the most attention and the locations of rogue beach tires. Please let us know if you can help with these tasks well in advance of May 17th. Also, let us know if you can volunteer in the beach clean-up on the May 17th collection event (in the time period 9AM-4PM)-we will provide bags and instructions. Collection staging areas are Jensen Point on the Burton Peninsula (confirmed with Vashon Park District and Vashon Rowing Club) and Dockton Park parking area on Maury Island (confirmed with King County Parks). For additional information, you can read the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber Article about the event in the 27March2025 issue: https://www.vashonbeachcomber.com/opinion/commentary-an-epic-fix-for-vashons-rogue-tires/.
UPDATE 14May2025
Jensen Point and Dockton Park are the two staging areas to pick up tools and bags (Thanks to Vashon Nature Center and Erinn McKintyre for providing them) and to drop off your collected beach trash and tires.
We will be there 9AM-4PM.
If you are aware of any beaches in particular need of cleaning up, let me know at scbergmanvashon@gmail.com.
The South coast of Maury Island along the Maury Marine Park has lots of styrofoam and other plastics hiding amongst the piles of driftwood-be careful as you collect it.
When you visit Jensen Point, you will see the pile of over 80 tires to the left of the boat ramp we have already unearthed and collected so far!
