There was only the one Perkins Bacon plate made and used for all printings from the 1d black of 1854 to the 1d Carmine-pink of 1888.
All positions have been plated. The most noteable flaws are the Pre-Entries at positions 28, 170 & 182 known as Double tail swans.
Position 28.
Position 170.

Hi Glen.
The Tilted border is easy to recognise once you know where to look.
You can see part of the existing border below O & S of POSTAGE the bottom of the OS shows in the central design also the waterline of the swan swims down to the left [It is not level with the lower border ].
Regards Snaws

Re: The Stamps of Western Australia a visual Catalogue.
I almost forgot this stamp below.
It's not the prettiest example but the only example i know of the 2d Rouletted with watermark upright inverted.
SG 30. 2d orange-vermilion. Rouletted Variety wmk upright inverted.
The Two Pence value has been plated. For the plating study see the brilliant book on the subject by the Western Australia Study Group.
The plate was damaged in the form of what appears to be a slither of steel forming a scratch across top of the swans head at position 9.
SG 25. Variety scratch on swans head.[position 9]
The plate was repaired on return to England before the next issue was printed in blue.

Great thread and a very impressive collection of swans.
Hopefully this thread will grow to show images of all the creased transfers and plated positions of the 4D blue.
Here is my copy of the Tilted border, one other identifier is the nick in 'F' of FOUR.
I'll put a better picture up once I have a new scanner

Thankyou johnrambo and Morgan.
Johnrambo they are some nice stamps you show. The creased transfers rarely come up for sale so are quite hard to get.
Glen if you are reading this can you please let me know if the images i've been posting are too big, as i'm on broadband it seen to take a while for this thread to fully show.[ I can make lower resolution scans for the rest if need be.]
Also Glen i should have asked if there is any problem listing these with Gibbons numbers and when i get to the Commonwealth period i was going to use ACSC numbers will this be a problem?
Regards snaws.

No the images are great sized and resolution. (Not ever keen on the lower case "i"s however, on any quality thread here!)
SG and ACSC will not mind as free advertising for them. If you start typing "SG" and not the curious "sg" as per my email to you, they will mind even less I imagine.
The page loads slowly as each page is 50 posts. If each post has up to SIX large images as some do above, the computer needs to call up 200-300 pix EVERY time you open a page.
If only 2 or 3 images per post, then you are calling up half as much data each time, and hence page opens twice as fast for all!
Here is my contribution for today - a lovely 1/- with the Crown REGISTERED hand-stamp - not supposed to be applied solely to the stamps.
Glen

Thankyou Glen.
I shall try to remember the I and the SG.
Sorry I wouldn't have received your email as the one on file has been gone for about 3 years. As you will be aware I entered a valid email yesterday.

Re: The Stamps of Western Australia. A visual Catalogue.
The control markings.
The Watermarked paper returned from Western Australia to Perkins Bacon was devided for the printing of the 5 values.
The sheets were handstamp on the rear upper left corner with a crown over two parallel lines the bottom line being shorter to accommodate the value.
I have 1d & 2d shown below. The 4d shown is from the Walkley sale by Prestige Philately. I have seen a 6d but have never seen a 1/- handstamp.
Does anyone have a scan of the 6d or 1/- to share please?
SG 33. 1d rose. Intermediate perf 14-16 with part crown control marking.
SG 41. 2d blue Clean-cut perf 14-16 with part control marking.
SG 40. 4d vermillion perf 14 with part control marking.

Re: The Stamps of Western Australia. A visual Catalogue.
The CANCELLED Handstamp.
Perkins Bacon applied the CANCELLED handstamp to six examples of each of the stamp issues available in 1861 being 75 different stamps and gave them to members of Sir Rowland Hill's family.
This was a major factor in De La Rue taking over the stamp printing for the Colony.
From Western Australia the stamps taken were the 1861 Rough Perf 14-16 1d,6d & 1/-.
SG 44. 1d rose-carmine. [position 182 double tailed swan Pre-entry]
Two examples known still to exist one being in the Royal Collection.
Not in my collection.
SG 45. 6d purple on blued paper.
Four examples known still to exist a pair being in the Royal Collection.
Not in my collection.
SG 46. 1/- deep green.
Five examples known still to exist one being in the Royal Collection.

Hi Glen.
I was just coming back to edit the SG as I have had the text prepared for a few days and forgot to alter those but realised on the last post.

Re: The Stamps of Western Australia. A visual Catalogue.
Today I start the Crown over CC watermark issues.
I have decided to follow Juhls catalogue as it is far superior to SG however I shall include SG numbers.
For those not familiar with Juhls Catalogue here is a scan of the cover of IMHO the best catalogue ever produced for Western Australia.

The Six Pence double prints are know in few examples, one shows doubling of the upper half only, another shows doubling of the lower third only. Once again these are kiss prints caused from the curling of the paper when printing.
