We Speak We Stand: Orientation Performance and Discussion
We Speak We Stand Performance:

WE Speak WE Stand is two sections of monologues written and performed by Wesleyan students addressing sexual violence and alcohol use.  These peer theater pieces are a powerful introduction to sexual violence and alcohol use on campus and aim to create a campus that is actively engaged in the prevention of sexual assault and relationship violence and advocates for the responsible use of alcohol.

These skits are performed as "reader's theater," where the performers carry a script to refer to rather than fully memorizing them. Performers are encouraged to be familiar enough with the material that they do not need to read from their script verbatim. The setting is very minimal and no costumes are worn, allowing audience members to use their imaginations to fill in details, based on what they are hearing.

We Speak We Stand Discussion:

After the performance, first-year students will have small group discussions about the themes in the performance.  As a volunteer you will be expected to help create a safe space for dialogue and to teach basic bystander intervention skills that were introduced in the performance. Intervening with peers can be challenging for a number of reasons and this discussion along with trainings offered throughout the year will provide students with the skills to move from inaction to action and intervene safely and effectively. Alcohol and sexual violence can be difficult topics for people to discuss, despite the fact that they may hold very strong opinions.  How the conversation goes may depend greatly on the rapport you develop with the participants.

Meals & Housing:

Early arrival begins on 8/24.  You should plan to move back to campus on 8/24 or 8/25.  You cannot move in before that.  Residence Life will be in touch with you directly about your early arrival housing.

Most meals during the week you arrive early will be provided by WesWell/Orientation.  More details on the specific meals that are covered or not covered will be shared with performers prior to the summer.
