Southwest Florida’s population is projected to nearly double by 2060. “Not only is our population increasing, we are going to see more construction on our roadways,” said Lee Health Injury Prevention Resource Coordinator Syndi Bultman. That’s especially true as we’re still dealing with some of the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. “There are a ton of roads, bridges, and signs that need to be repaired.” Safe driving is no accident. “Every single one of those repair workers has a family or somebody that loves them at home just like you have family that loves you at home,” said Bultman. “We want everybody to be safe and make it home at the end of the day.” If you know of road construction, see if you can find another route. If you do find yourself in a construction zone, “You are watching to make sure they don’t have any trucks that are entering. Watch the signs because they will pop out right in front of you,” said Bultman. Don’t tailgate, use your blinker and always stay off your phone. “If you are sending a text, that takes 4.6 seconds for you to do that. If you’re traveling at 55 miles an hour that’s like traveling entire length of a football field with your eyes blindfolded,” said Bultman.
