In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts
The Myth of Normal
Can watching movies about addiction and recovery help people kick the habit? That’s what Hollywood veteran Ted Perkins set out to discover as he battled against his own stubborn drinking problem. Barricaded in a bedroom with nothing more than an iTunes movie account, microwave popcorn and Diet Coke, he watched 100 movies in 100 days. And it worked. Thanks to the magic and power of story he was able to see his addiction in a radical new light and follow a non-traditional yet highly effective path towards successful recovery.
In this insightful and entertaining book, Perkins discusses how his Top 25 Best (and worst) films about addiction and recovery not only helped save his life, but also shares what vital lessons they may teach others in recovery, their loved ones, or the wider addiction recovery community in general.
Thoroughly researched and vetted by top addiction researchers and professionals, Perkins chronicles 80 years of Hollywood’s daring efforts to bring the serious subject of addiction to a worldwide audience in authentic, entertaining, and occasionally hilarious ways.
Whether it’s movies about alcohol, heroin, gambling or chocolate, each chapter is also a behind-the-scenes look at the struggles the filmmakers faced to get the films produced, the ingenious ways they were marketed, the huge risks many actors faced when taking on the roles, and how some of those gambles paid off with multiple Academy Awards.
Regardless of whether you’re in recovery, work to help others in their recovery, or just love great movies, Addicted in Film manages to take the sometimes difficult conversation about addiction and recovery and render it accessible, informative, engaging, and at times laugh-out-loud funny.
“This book is a must-have if you or anyone you know has been touched by addictive problems. It’s filled with enlightening stories about powerful films that could become a turning point for people.”
—DR. TOM HORVATH,
CO-FOUNDER, SMART RECOVERY,
AUTHOR OF SEX, DRUGS, GAMBLING & CHOCOLATE
Here is an excellent, moving book on addiction recovery to read and share. Ted Perkins uses stories in movies about addictions as a vehicle to understand the complexities, heartbreak, and horror of addictions while leading us to real hope of radical transformation. His own life story is a dramatic example of recovery and its redemptive power.
—MICHAEL WERNER,
PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN HUMANIST
ASSOCIATION (RETIRED)
Ted Perkins is a person for whom films have deep personal meanings. Ted also (obviously) has deep feelings about addiction. In his marvelous book, he combines these meaningful parts of his life for the benefit of those who seek meaning in their own lives, whether addicted themselves or not.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI cannot remember having so much fun reading a book about a film, that also happens to be about addiction and recovery. It is informative, fast-moving, and absorbing. The book is entertaining because it makes you want to watch the movies as you read the book. I also l appreciate how Ted Perkins has organized the book into chapters about various movies. As soon as I read one chapter, I watched the movie he discussed which gave me insight I would not have gotten otherwise. It was also helpful to see how often he compares the same movie produced at different times. For example, he compared and contrasted the 1976 and 2018 versions of A Star is Born. An added bonus at the end of the book is when he invites you to join his movie club where you can be part of future discussions. Most helpful is getting reviews of movies that are currently in the theater, giving the reader nuances that would not have been seen without reading his review first. Thank you, Mr. Perkins.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTed Perkins uses his insight into the addiction realm and film making to explain the nuances and harsh realities those of us in recovery have experienced. I love how he draws upon a vast knowledge of Hollywood and the global film industry along with its history. Using the lived experience of his journey to recovery, Perkins melds both worlds to inform and entertain.
Personally, some of the passages hit awfully hard. Having been there, they remind me that I never want to go back. I am certain other readers will feel the same way.
As a person in recovery who volunteers and works professionally with others, I have been recommending “Addicted in Film” to people in recovery and affected family and friends. It provides a look into the dark world where many suffer that is relatable in a way only film can provide.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a great read! Perkins’ has keen insight into his subject matter as a Hollywood “insider,” as a person who has experienced addiction, and as one who helps others in their recovery. He sees beyond the train wrecks depicted in these films and uses each chapter to show us how, unlike the movies, our lives are not scripted, and we have the power to write our own endings. I am going to watch these movies (some for the first time) with Addicted in Film as my guide to therapeutic viewing.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchasePerkins’ book is an excellent companion for anyone involved with addiction and recovery and curious how a Hollywood insider, and also recovery mentor, sees these themes play out in movies. Perkins expertly (yet playfully!) accompanies the reader through the parallels and pitfalls, highs and rock-bottoms, tragedies and laugh-out-loud funny moments of the best known addiction based stories ever shot on film. I felt like I was time traveling from one movie set to the next…
Cheers to Perkins for distilling these two worlds of addiction and film making into one vintage blend. Just excellent stuff!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is right up my alley - easy reading, interesting stories, cool insights into why the nitty gritty of the tough parts of real life and recovery are rarely shown in movies.
The only complaint is that this is definitely something that would be better for me as an audiobook. I almost never actually read anymore, but even so this book got me reading again for the first time in a long while… but since I’m not listening to the content while I’m out driving or running errands, I keep streaming a lot of the movies after I read a chapter and finding tons of good movies I never had the opportunity or desire to see before.
So I guess my complaint is that the book does a great job of helping me find good movies that do a great job of portraying addiction and recovery. Which is only undesirable because I have no idea when I’ll actually finish the book because I keep stopping to get caught up in a good movie.
A few of the chapters are about movies I watched and really liked a long time ago before I ever had any addictions so they’re a completely different experience now that I understand what it’s like to struggle with being on the addicted side and the process of working past the discouraging lapse/relapse period most of us go through on the way to staying sober.
So I’m probably only about halfway through, and I have never reviewed just half a book before, but what I’ve finished was worth telling others about.
If you’ve ever loved someone with an addiction or struggled with problem habits, and struggled to understand, **and** you like movies that have dark elements and doses of harsh reality here and there, I think you’ll like the book, or at least the first half.
I’ll update this review after I finish reading the book and watching the movies.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTed Perkins’ look at recovery through the medium of film is insightful, well researched and written. One I couldn’t put down! In recovery myself, it being relatable and is an engaging read for anyone in recovery or wanting to learn more about the process with a theme that is common to most. Honest and open, a true modern day guide book as to recovery, how media portray it, and how they sometimes get it wrong!

This book should be in the hands of all people who are interested in addiction / recovery issues, knows someone who is struggling, or in recovery themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important - Useful - Funny
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWhen I went to rehab 15 years ago every Saturday morning the patients watched a film together, I was there for 5 Saturdays, and I moved my opinion from a cynical viewpoint that they could shove us all in a room for 2 hours with no staff and keep us quiet, to one understanding that I could understand myself, my addiction and find inspiration for my recovery through the objective experience of watching a movie. As time went on and I studied, then qualified to work in addiction treatment, I would volunteer to watch films with clients and run discussions afterwards. I still refer to film with a lot of clients these days, but have only just come across this masterful book, and I use that adjective advisedly - Mr Perkins has "mastered" this subject. His own professional background and experience, coupled with a real understanding of addiction and above all a real knowledge of film in general, and the titles selected in particular make this a mini-memoir, industry critique and therapy friendly title all in one. I read it in one weekend and am now making my way through the accompanying work book, and the films (again) with fresh eyes. Great work!
