The First Decree (Wycaan Master Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

It was I, King Hothen the Elder, who led the surviving dwarf warriors from the battlefield. Our numbers were perilously small, our prospects harrowing. We left our dead to the vultures and the crows.

With our armies decimated, I led our people to a deep cave, far away, and there we built mighty Hothengold. The first law passed was one of survival, known as The First Decree. No man, elf or other – save dwarves – were allowed under the mountains. Those who wandered our way fell to our axes, and the great dwarf nation drifted out of sight and mind of even the most ambitious emperors.

But hearken to my words, noble dwarves. The land of Odessiya will never heal until the races reunite. Whether by promise or blade, the Alliance will rise again, and the dwarf nation shall take its rightful place at the council of the great races.

Until then, my people, I counsel patience, a trait rarely found among dwarves. Grow our clans and our wealth away from the eyes of the empire, but never forget who we once were.

Be vigilant, be patient, and wait the coming of the Wycaan.

About the Author

Deep in a redwood forest in Northern California, a boy and his father sat at a picnic table and created an epic fantasy world. The ancient trees bore witness to the summoning of the Wycaan Masters. Alon Shalev is the author of social justice-themed novels, A Gardener's Tale, The Accidental Activist, and Unwanted Heroes. He is the lead writer of the political blog, leftcoastvoices.com, and never expected to delve into the world of fantasy. In 2010, while on a family camping trip in the Northern California redwoods, his then 11-year-old son, who devours YA fantasy, objected to his father opening his laptop and writing. A compromise was reached and both were soon deeply engrossed in what became the first of three epic novels (so far). Alon Shalev lives in Berkeley, California with his wife and two sons. As a fantasy writer, he blogs at elfwriter.com and tweets @elfwriter.

Alon Shalev lives and writes in two worlds. He is the author of three social justice-themed novels and two trilogies of Young Adult Epic Fantasy. He is convince there's a connection.

In 2009, while on a family camping trip in Northern California, Shalev began writing an epic fantasy novel to read to his young sons around the campfire. Over the next five years, both sons and the ancient redwood forests bore witness to the summoning of the Wycaan Masters.

His first epic fantasy novel, At The Walls Of Galbrieth, won the 2013 Eric Hoffer Book Award - YA Category and was a Grand Prize Finalist. The sequel, The First Decree, was released in March 2013, and the third book in the series, Ashbar, was released in October 2013.

The second trilogy jumps a generation with Sacrificial Flame (2014) and From Ashes They Rose (2015) and continues the story at a more adult level. Th trilogy climaxes with Calhei No More released in November 2016. All books are published by Tourmaline Books.

More details about these novels can be found at the author's website (www.alonshalev.com) and he blogs at www.elfwriter.com.

Shalev works for the global human rights organization, American Jewish World Service (ajws.org). His activism is rooted in his teenage years campaigning with the Anti-Apartheid movement, for the release of Jews from the Soviet Union, and helping the burgeoning green movement. This led him to explore using fiction as a platform for social justice

Shalev has published three social-justice themed novels:

Unwanted Heroes (pub. Three Clover Press) brings together an old, battle-scarred Chinese American war vet and an idealistic and pretentious young Englishmen, who share a love for San Francisco, coffee and wine. They soon discover they share even more when repressed memories bring them together as they find in each other unlikely allies to set themselves free from the tragic past that binds them both.

A Gardener's Tale (pub Three Clover Press) takes place in England and is a story of healing of family, land and community, along with th elegancy of the Pagan religion and its time-honored impact upon rural communities.

The Accidental Activist is a fictional account of the astonishing 'McLibel' trial that captivated Britain in the 1990's, a David .v. Goliath court case that highlights the treachery and ruthlessness of the multinational corporations and how the advent of the Internet can curb them, when a few individuals refuse to back down. It is a defense of Freedom of Speech and the acknowledgment of the Internet as a tool for social change.

The second book in the Wycann Master series is just as wonderful and engaging as the first book - maybe even more so!!!

It's a beautifully imaginative story that follows succinctly from the first page and keeps you completely enchanted to the very last.

It is impossible to not fall head over heels in love with the main characters and their story. In fact I suspect the Wycann series casts a spell all of its own over its readers - it is just such a fantastic and addictive read!!!

Can't wait for the next book!!!

Having read the first book in the series, I found 'The First Decree' a well written follow up and a good continuance to the story of the Wycaan Master. The love between Senchai and Illana develops nicely in this book as does the change in Shayth from a very deep, dark individual to a more engaging youth who finds himself drawn to Senchai and his group. The friendship between these young warriors grows stronger and deeper with every chapter, culminating in a cliffhanger ending. I am looking forward with great enthusiasm to the final installment in the 'Wycaan Master' series to find out what happens to all the characters and if the emperor will actually be defeated. Well written, hard to put down and story line is very well developed. It could be a bit longer with more descriptions on battles and characters but that doesn't detract from the enjoyment derived from reading the book. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed. E.K.

After having read the first part of this story, the expectations for this second part were very high. And luckily the writer managed to keep the same quality as the first book, and even add some extra to it. Lot of fighting and action in this book, nice things happening and sad things too (unfortunately). Now looking forward to reading the third part, hoping it will be the conclusion of the story (although so many things are still left open at the end of this story, that I wonder how the writer will fit everything in only one extra part). Keep up the good work, and you have great cover-art!

This is the second in the series, and, like everything else in the first three books, the name of the book reflects imagination and creativity rarely seen in a new author. But don't start with this one: first read, The Walls of Galbrieth, then The First Decree, and then Ashbar. I hear a fourth book in the series is coming out soon, I can hardly wait!

This book is just as good, if not better, than the first. I enjoyed getting to know the characters better and following their journey. I read a lot of books in this genre and have to say this series ranks up there with the big name authors, in my humble opinion. I hope there are many more to come.

This whole series of books are on a parr with Harrry Potter, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit should be made as film but please don't let Peter Jackson near it Any of the Harry Potter directors would do a much better job.
Wonderful characters and weaving plots make you shout and cheer, laugh and cry a real pager turner series

It is a measure of how much I enjoyed the first book that as soon as I completed it I bought this one! The plot and the characters were developed well. The author has a fluid style of writing that makes it a pleasure to read and I am eagerly anticipating the next in the series!

Dwarfs are always a favourite fantasy creature for me, and Shalev does not disappoint with his portrayal of the race in his second instalment of Senchai's adventures. A really addictive read.
